  • Moved to rung 7 and not to excited about it.

Well like the Jeffersons I am moving on up. I am not at rung 7 and while looking at the food choices I am kinda eh about it. I have never cared for melons and I never really ate apples or other fruits on this rung. Maybe once in awhile but def not frequently.

Yesterday I went and bought a couple of apples. I figured I could make fried apples with butter, splenda and cinnamon. I also thought of a slice or two of apple with melted cheese over it. I really want to try out this rung as I know I need too. Is there anything you used to make that might peek my interest in this rung?

Watch portion sizes. Is my best advice. Fruits will not be a major thing on OWL. Something maybe you add to your salad or creamy and nutty dessert. You have to go with what you like. It is about you testing out foods you want eat. There is nothing you really have to do. I like fruits so I have no problem including them. My problem is limiting them I eat my fruit with nuts or nut butters usually.

Thats it. I think I am more a berry person than fruit person. My next rung is starchy veggies and I think I am hanging here to stall going to that rung, if that makes sense. I know I can be good here, the next rung ugh is going to be tough on the portion sizes. I will just try a few things out that I would normally eat which is apples and pears in the fall and then suck it up and move on to rung 8. I am working hard to get to pre maint as I am now 10lbs or less to goal. I will find out April 2nd when I see my nutritionist if I have to stop now or later.

      Thank you for your reply

Just remember the "other fruit" rung includes all other fruit: peaches, plums, grapes/raisins, pineapple, mangoes, bananas, pears, oranges/citrus fruit, etc.

Re: Moved to rung 7 and not to excited about it.

I've never really been a fruit person meaning I seldom ate fruit just by itself (except maybe when it is fresh and in season maybe a little bit). I used fruit as an accent and I do miss that. A couple of weeks ago when we had duck I missed having my orange sauce.
            • Fruit is great in veg salads.
            • Ham with pineapple rings on it.
            • Poached pears or pears with pork.
            • Either apple or peach goes well with chicken.
            • Fruit goes great with cottage cheese. I like this combo better than fruit and yogurt as the cottage cheese doesn't have the sugars (lactose) that yogurt does and I don't get that sugar buzz.
            • Recipes like this Orange Pork with Peppers.
            • Here is an apple breakfast sausage recipe that I can't wait to try.

There are a zillion recipes out there that use fruits in main dishes. At least it seems that way to me because I'm not in the fruit rung.

That is one thing I can't bring myself to eat, fruit and meat together. I have tried many times and I just can't do it. I forgot about pineapple though and I do like pineapple so I will grab me some and try that. Much more exciting to me than an apple.

Melons (except watermelon) are on the earlier fruit rung, for what it's worth.

Even like turkey and cranberry sauce? When I eat meat and fruit combinations, I make the fruit savory----not some sort of sugary, jammy concoction that would taste terrific over ice cream or a piece of cake---but something tart, maybe with heat from a chili pepper, alittle salty. If it's too sweet, it makes the food rather disgusting (I agree with you there!)

Yup. Don't forget citrus like oranges or grapefruit. Little segments of oranges go nicely in a green salad or in a salad of steamed asparagus and snow peas, blue cheese and a viniagrette. That little bit of fruitiness adds another dimension to veggies.

I was lucky enough to find fresh kumquats in a local Asian grocery store about a month ago. I've never eaten fresh kumquats before so it was a nice sweet-sour-citrusy taste experience. According to the package 1 cup was about 5 net carbs...the USDA lists it as 100 grams with about 10 net carbs. I know I ate less because 2 kumquats were my limit....not because they didn't taste good, but because it was so flavor packed, a couple of kumquats were totally satisfying.

Re: Moved to rung 7 and not to excited about it.

No cranberry sauce for me. No fruit in my salad unless it is a fruit salad. I have very strange eating habits I guess lol. I have never been a big sweet food eater. Fruits are awfully sweet to me. I would rather eat a cold piece of fried chicken or left over meat than have something sweet. I notice my son is the same way. I love to bake and bake often for my DH and his parents but my son and I never touch the stuff. It makes doing Atkins easier for me as I don't miss the sweet stuff like some.

I do like breaded foods which are a no no for now. Potatoes were another downfall for me. Butter and salt them up and I am in heaven.

Ahhh, a fellow starchy-carb addict ! I know what you mean about the starchy carbs...pre-Atkins Thanksgiving dinner while the rest of the family was piling their dessert plates with the cakes and pies, I was loading my dessert plate with the mashed potatoes and whatever pasta or rice dishes were left over.

I found that fruits are very sweet for me now and I have to cut their sweeteness with something sour, like sour cream or vinegar or lemon juice. Or add something totally off-the-wall like freshly ground black pepper on melons (honeydew, cantaloup) and strawberries. A bit of ground chili pepper is nice too.

Something like pineapple is sweet and sour so I don't have to add anymore sour but I do mix it in something like tomato salsa. Or my favorite: slice it up and freeze the slices in a single layer on a cookie sheet, then transfer to a freezer plastic bag----pineapple popsicles to be eaten as is or to be used as an ice cube in iced herbal teas.

I couldn't do fruit as fruit when I got to rung 7 cause I had to have the whole thing and 5 net grams of carbs is just so dang small with fruits so I added them to foods I already had like as an addition to my flax hotcakes or muffins. buttered apple hotcakes with cinnamon and nutmeg were yummy.
as were pears plums ( workes better as bits of prunes so as not to make batter too wet to cook and pinapple ( Not2late remeber our discussion about them really being berries for rung 4 LOL).

you could add it to yogurt from rung 2 either raw or cooked. if you made cereal from your nuts and seeds you could add some to it instead of berries.

I like to dry it and add it to my GORP for snacking on the go.

I wasn't into the berry rung but I decided to eat them sparingly. You don't have to eat those fruits. But if you want them just portion them out. You could buy the bagged sliced apples and take out 3 slices for a snack. I can't imagine eating a whole banana on this wol since they turn easily.

Technically you could just eat more avocado since it's a fruit.

I would eat the fruit you like when you want to eat it. Starting with the apples is great but it does not mean you have to add it in frequently.

I just had some pineapple yummy. I made sausage, egg and cheese breakfast bowls for me and the family for breakfast/brunch and had a small chunck of pineapple on the side.
