  • Sushi Anyone........

    Hi All,

I am so glad I found this forum so I can ask questions and get opinions about this lifestyle change. I am on rung 5, I just added back wine this weekend. I probably wont drink it but once or month if that much. Because I am very comfortable at this level I have made the decision to stay until I lose at least 40 to 50 lbs before I start moving up again. However, I do want some sushi. Yes, I know I want it but dont need it, but it would be nice to have a few a couple days a week. And yes, I know the grain wrung is the last one (9). But I do not plan to add back beans, starchy veggies, or other fruits. I didn't eat much of those things anyway. I was a peanut butter, chcolate, and sweet snack hound. Peanut butter is such a weakness with me that I am weary of adding it back (natural or otherwise) and have not. What is your opinion of adding that (Sushi) back, if it does not stall my weight loss?

If I could eat sushi, all will be well for me. Paradise.

If you do not want to add the intervening rungs then you can move on to the next one you want to eat from if you like.

Just stick to the 5 net carbs addition, which isn't a large amount for cooked rice - about 2 tablespoons I think.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

You should check the carb counts yourself.

I don't each much sushi, but do crave it occasionally. I found that if I eat it, because now I also eat smaller portions, the amount of rice doesn't affect me much. I used to eat 2 or 3 rolls (so 10-15 peices or more) of JB roll. This is salmon, cream cheese, and avacado or chives (depending on the place). I also used to eat a salad and have a soda.

Now it's one roll and salad and water with lemon. Oh, and most places offer brown rice now instead of white. If I have that for lunch then have a dinner that is on the lower carb side, then it doesn't stall me or make me gain.

Oh, and if you exercise at all, try having it on the day you have your workout. That seems to help too. Just don't over-indulge. A once a month thing maybe.

You can still have sushi without having the rice. I sometimes buy sushi-grade salmon/tuna and an avocado and cucumber, and it always fills the craving.

Be careful of sushi prepared in a restaurant. The seasoned vinegar is seasoned with salt and SUGAR. It is possible to make your own legal sushi rice at home, using a sugar substitute.

Also be aware that California rolls use fake crab meat. That contains quite a bit of sugar too.

Try ricing up some cauliflower and using it to make your own sushi. Just buy the wrap, rice some cauliflower, spread it on the wrap, put your fish, avacado, cucumber or whatever you like on the end, and roll it up tight. Slice it up and you have a version of sushi that Dr. Atkins would probably eat.

Building on coachbarbe's suggestion, you can use bean sprouts in your sushi rice mixture too or shredded jicama(!).

I like having "scattered sushi" which is a bowl of sushi rice with the filling (fish, nori, etc.) scattered on the top. To low carb this, you can use the cauliflower "rice" as a base or a mix of the cauliflower rice with other Rung specific ingredients, like shredded jicama, minced radish, minced carrots, etc. Then scatter fish, crab, shrimp, azuki beans (yeah...it's not traditional but it tastes good when you get to the Legumes Rung!), etc. I've developed the habit of using the nori wrapper like this: divide the sheet into quarters then use the quarter as a mini-wrap for the scattered sushi.
