  • confirmation that moving onto OWL works

    Hi Everyone,
I had stayed on 20 carbs a day for way to long and was struggling - I had added differant foods back into my eating but kept at around 20-30 carbs, as although I read the book, I didn't keep on the plan. Then I found this board and by reading so many threads, and reading the book again I decided to start OWL properly. I moved onto dairy and then nuts. This week I've lost 2lbs to bring my total to 50lbs.
A to everyone as I feel your support and love the encouragment and ideas I get from reading here.
For those of you doubtful about moving onto OWL - don't be! Just do it by the book and it works!!!

      Great progress, Paula
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

        That's great!

Which version of the book are you reading that says to go on to dairy, then nuts? I'm just curious because I've always read that it was 5 carbs of induction veggies for OWL rung 1, but that's probably because I only have read the 2002 version and haven't gotten to the OWL chapter in NANY as of yet.

No, I've read the same book as you. Veggies are rung 1, dairy 2, nuts 3 and where I am now, berries 4. I had some fresh strawberries yesterday with whipped cream. It was that when I found this board and read the book properly, I figured I was almost doing the OWL rung 2 in my "pre by the book days" so I decided not go backwards, but start with the dairy rung. I stopped eaing nuts and fruits until I reached the correct rung. I hope I'm not rushing the rungs to fast, but the scale will tell me if I'm going to fast.

Did you ever add in the extra vegetables.?

Yes, I eat lots of vegetables. Now that I'm on the higher rung carbs - berries so I'm upto 40 carbs now, I eat most of my carbs from vegetables, as I don't always want a full 5 carbs from nuts or from dairy. I think I'm understanding this properly, if you are on 40 carbs a day, but if you eat meat or tuna at no carbs and 1 egg at 1 carb, and don't want any cheese - or only a little, then you have to get up to that carb count number with veggies. As I understand it, you don't want to go 20 carbs one day and then 40 the next when you should be on 40 a day. I try to stick to that exact number, but sometimes I'm over or under.
For example, today I had 1.5 cups of cooked spinach (I won't do that much again it was to much!) with my breakfast, with ricotta chees, bacon and 1 egg. For lunch I have at least 2 cups of lettuce, a tomato, some avacado with salmon and mayo. Dinner I'll have string beans and broccoli and what ever meat my DH makes.

Glad you moved to OWL and have been having success looking for your CCLL and shrinking your body. Congrats on shedding those 50 pounds.
rung 3 is actually one ounce of nuts not 5 grams per Dr Atkins concept that one ounce of most nuts is 5 grams.

Re: confirmation that moving onto OWL works

I meant to say that I stick with one once of nuts, but sometimes I'm just to full and don't want to eat anything more to keep my carb count up to the level I'm on, so I don't eat nuts everyday.
