  • If I'm not losing weight now....

Good morning everyone. I laid in bed last night pondering over this. If I'm on extended induction now, becuase I have a lot of weight to lose, and I'm not really losing weight.... how am I supposed to lose weight moving to OWL? I mean, I'll be introducing more carbs, how can that work?

During my fist 2 weeks of induction I lost around 12 pounds.

Then gained a few back, then lost a couple, then gained back... Which I realize the up & down is expected but I haven't moved from those 2 pounds for over 2 weeks!

Maybe I need to add more calories and fat, I try I just can't seem to get those numbers up. Even so, before Atkins I bet I was eating 3,000-4,000 calories a day! Now that I'm down to 1,200 or so, you'd think I'd lose just from that.

I'm just really confused. and YES... I"VE READ THE BOOK. I've read up to OWL, but didn't want to read that part until I was just about there.

    Thanks for helping.

By eating at Induction level of carbs, you might (and, in my experience, are likely to) undereat some nutrients... and that can slow down your metabolism and bring weight loss to a halt.

Now that I'm down to 1,200 or so
By eating only 1200 calories on average, you are very likely to put your body in starvation mode and mess up your metabolism. That will interfere with losing weight.

I would suggesting eating more food, to increase your calories... and also add 5 net carbs of vegetables. It's just veggies... and, based on your 2-week Induction weight loss, you are not metabolically resistant.

      Hi.

When did you complete Induction? It's not uncommon to stall after induction for a bit. You just really changed things up a bit, lost a bunch of weight, etc. and the body sometimes needs some time to adjust.

Also, looking at your Ftiday, it doesn't look like you're eating enough, calories and probably protein and better veggies. Your fat % is good, but your veggies tend to be mostly salad veggies and not enough of them and lots of carbs from non-veggie carbs (cheese, flax, cream, etc.). Nothing wrong with non-veggie carbs as long as you're also eating enough veggies as well. Try adding in some denser veggies such as broccoli, green beans, cauliflower, etc. There's so many to choose from!! They provide alot more nutrition that the body needs.

Also like you suspected, less than 1200 calories a day may cause a weight stall as your body isn't getting enough of the nutrients it needs. Add more meat and don't be afraid to, such as 5-6 oz. of meat for dinner and lunch. You really can eat that much and lose weight! Trust me. I went through the same thing, only eating around 1100-1200 calories a day and my weight loss stalled. Since I upped it, my weight loss is better and I feel better.

And be sure to measure! Many times, you will be losing inches instead of weight.

As for OWL, it really does work, and often better than Induction, for losing weight. It offers much more nutritious foods that the body needs (more veggies, fruits on rung 4!) than Induction, plus more variety and that makes it much easier to stick to this Way of Eating while continuing to lose weight. It's not the 20 net carbs or less that help you lose weight, it's finding your CCLL that allows you to eat more foods, remain in ketosis, learn what your food triggers and stallers are, and continue to lose weight over the long term.

Even with alot of weight to lose, this second time, I jumped right back into OWL after Induction as it works better for me and I have all kinds of health conditions that make weight loss slow. I so love lots of veggies and berries!
      Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
      STAC Restart: 1/05/09
      306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

      Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
      Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

      Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
      Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
      Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!
Female/Hypothyroidism/Arthritis/Fibromyalgia - If I can lose weight on this, so can you!

My hunch (and experience reading other's) is that you've overstayed your welcome on Induction. Induction isn't about losing, it's about getting your body ready to lose.

Undereating can lead to "stalls" ... which might be EXACTLY what is going on with your body.

Staying on Induction too long is generally counterproductive, as is undereating.

Try Rung 1 OWL. It can't be any worse than where you are now.

You guys are right! That's why I love this site. I'm so scared to go into OWL, not sure why... but I believe it's b/c I don't understand it 100% yet and I have a preconcieved notion in my head that more food = more weight. I know that's not the case, its just something I have to get out of my head.

So, here's the deal. I'm going to start reading into the OWL chapters in the book then after bootcamp is over I'm going to dive into rung 1.

Thanks for giving me the confidence to move on.

          HUGS!

            Don't be scared.

All you do for OWL Rung 1 is add 5 net carbs of any Induction veggie to your current Induction menu.

OWL RUNG 1 is the most important rung in my opinion. since the veggies are the building blocks to our meals (not protein) it's very important to get a handle on it. This is why I moved back from OWL to Induction to move back to OWL, RUNG 1, if you wonder why I am at induction again. I plan on staying at RUNG 1 until I can be assured to eat the appropriate amount and be confident in my meal planning.

I'd move on to OWL. You will thank yourself for it.
