  • Changing phase question

    Hi,

When I went on the Atkins website and took a profile questionairre about my weigh, height, etc. it suggested that I star with OWL instead of induction.

I chose to start with induction and am wondering if I should do it for the whole 2 weeks or if I can go to OWL after 1 week.

It doesn't matter to me- I am not having trouble with induction and could do it for the whole time or longer- just wondering.

Any insight would be great. I don't want to stall - or get comfortable adding carbs and then go crazy. Maybe sticking with induction for the whole time will get me more in the habit of the right choices....

How much weight do you have to lose?

That is not the correct way to follow Atkins. To learn how to eat for life, you need to add foods back and find your carbohydrate levels for weight loss and maintenance.

Are you reading any Atkins book? Here we go by the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.

      Re: Changing phase question

Georgina, I have about 15 pounds to lose. Chose Atkins because no other efforts of my own worked. I was depriving myself and making up for what I was "missing out" on by eating a lot of the wrong things. For example, I wouldn't eat sweets but was eating handfuls of almonds. Or, I would eat lite all day and go crazy at dinner with portions etc......

oops... I didn't mean stay on induction forever, I meant stick to it for the whole 2 weeks rather than just one week....

The last 5-10 lbs should be lost in Pre-Maintenance and you need time to climb the Carbohydrate Ladder (which takes quite some time, for most people)... so, if I were you, I would start with OWL Rung 1. It's basically the same foods as you are allowed to eat on Induction, just extra 5 net carbs worth of vegetables.

            was eating handfuls of almonds.
Many people have portion control issues with nuts. When I reached Rung 3, I started with nuts flours, because they were more difficult to overeat.

You can also skip Rung 3 if it doesn't work (yet) for you.

I would eat lite all day and go crazy at dinner with portions
Try not to eat "lite" during the day. Eat a healthy number of calories (above your BMR), and spread them and your net carbs throughout the day.

Don't try to restrict calories on Atkins. From what I've seen, this almost always backfires.

If you follow this advice make sure you follow Atinks 2002 - the system at the webpage has OWL rung one including berries or something and i really think I would go with getting carbs from veggies for a bit just to get used to how that feels. Easier to judge the more sugary and carby items if you do that.

Not all the info at Atkins.com is correct or complete... so keep that in mind. They also follow The New Atkins for a New You, while at ADBB we go by the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.

If you want to make Atkins your way of eating for life, then I would suggest you get the book and read it.
