  • REQ: Meal plan 4 weekend $40...eating out of cooler 4 people

    I'm not following the rungs exactly, so consider me all the way through the rungs. I'm loosing regularly 1-2 lbs per week and have about 10 lbs to go.

    We're going to Branson this weekend, and I have about $40-$50 to spend on a family of 4 (2 adults, a 2 year old and a 6 year old). We're staying at a hotel, so no access to "cook" anything. Just a cooler. Start time is Friday dinner (most likely McDonalds on the road), end time is Monday breakfast (leave the hotel that morning, strait home):

    Here's what I thought. Tell me what to change/add. Obviously, I have to fudge somewhat:

    Breakfast: (they may have free continental but don't know 4 sure):
    - chereos/milk or doughnuts
    - water for me, coffee 4 wife, milk for kids
    - cheese?
    (I normally eat eggs and cheese but no way to cook them)

    Lunch:
    - Wonder family wheat bread sandwiches:
    * PBJ for the kids
    * lunchmeat/cheese/mayo for me
    - Fresh fruit (apple? Banana?)
    - Atkins bar for desert
    - cheese?
    Dinner: (meal out): Unsure yet:
    * McDonalds: Me = 2 big n tasty plain, no bun and a side salad
    * Pizza (2 slices) and a salad
    * Dockers Family Buffet (I'll choose my normal LC stuff, they eat what they want)

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to go way overboard, but with $ tight, some compromise is needed.
    Start date: 1/18/05 201 lbs. Currently 176 lbs!

    Congrats on your loss and you should be moving to Pre-Maintenance too.

    What you can eat on OWL depends on your rungs and your CCLL. Since you say you've gone through all the rungs, then the world is you oyster in terms of food choices. In your situation, all you would have to do is avoid added sugars, trans fats and highly refined grain products.

      if you know the name of the hotel check their free 800 number and see if you have a contenintal breakfast and if it has low carb do you have a coffee maker in the room and/or a microwave. Most hotels offer those now. Some have friges too.

      If you do that opens a whole new possibility for you.

        I'm facing quite the same situation this weekend :yikes - except we have to buy everything - we will stay at a not-yet-open camping and entertainment place (bf has a job there to do and they offered him to take family with him free). We will do camping, fishing, biking and hiking while he's working, but we can't cook (except camp-fire nor do we have frige...

          make some hard boiled eggs, put them in baggies in the cooler for breakfast... won't that work?

            Great ideas here.

            I camp a lot in the Summer. We have a couple of coolers cause we don't have a fridge. I take tons of veggies, cheese, salad dressing, mayo, etc. I LOVE cooking burgers and/or steaks on a campfire. Bags of frozen berries keep pretty good. I hard boil a lot of eggs to take along as well as regular eggs. We take sausage and bacon for breakfasts. There is NO reason why you can't continue this WOE while camping... NONE!!!

            As far as hotels go where you can't cook (I have been known to sneak an electric burner sometimes), grab a couple of coolers. You can take tea bags for iced tea (most hotels, if not all, have ice machines) instead of coffee. Take lunch meat type meats and salad items. Hardboil some eggs to take. Yogurt, cottage cheese. Pre-cook meats that aren't too bad cold like chicken & steaks. Depending on what rung you are on, nuts are a good snack or in salads. Beef jerky is good, watch the labels.

            Be creative and keep checking here for ideas. The more you can take, the less you will have to spend :nod

              my little nephews even love my 'picked' eggs... I'll boil a bunch.. dozen or so.... put them in a jar with vinegar and crushed red pepper...

              they think it's cool because they're sold with the 'beer' sausage in the stores... so they somehow get into them...even hubby likes them

                I'd agree with the boiled eggs, cheese, nuts, some salad veggies in baggies like washed and cut up radish, celery, peppers etc. you can bring a small tupperware container for dressing or mayo for dipping.

                Have you also considered baking a batch of low carb muffins or a bread? there are some excellent recipes for lc baked goods. Also you could make 'cheese crisps' by microwaving small pieces of cheese until crispy. They keep really well in tupperware and make great snacks. so do the microwaved flax cookie/crackers (you can find that recipe on this board.)

                I travelled recently and found the easy snack foods that pack well for the trip were nuts and string cheese and i made mini flax muffins for snacks.
