  • going nuts!

    Hi there,

I am new to Atkins, have just completed the 14 day induction period and have lost 8lbs, which has totally inspired me to keep on with it!

I am now introducing a few low carb foods, just so that I have a bit more variety.

I'm getting very confused about nuts, pistachios in particular and would really like some help!

I bought a bag of salted pistachios last night, on the back of the pack it stated:

Carbohydrates per pack 4g (including sugar 2g)
    Fibre 6g

According to the books you take the fibre away from the carbs to get total carbs? So would this be 0g carbs, or would it be 2g carbs (because of the sugar carbs)??!! Help!!

    Thanks in advance guys

Ok, firstly, you need to re-read the chapters on OWL in DANDR, and you need to go to the OWL forum here and read up on how to introduce foods back in in the proper order.

Some people add in almonds at the end of their two weeks, but it's best to save different nuts, like pistachios, until the nut rung.

I looked up pistachios on Fitday, and it says they have 10 carbs per cup when you subtract the fiber, and there's no listing of any sugars in them....so I'm not sure what the manufacturers of your pistachios are talking about there. I'd stick to nuts as close to natural as you can get, when you get to the correct rung.

What country are those pistachios packed in?
I ask because in UK and many other countries the fibre is already deducted from the carb count - so the 4 carbs could be NET carbs.

If it is listed as a separate entry (not as part of the carb count) then it has already been taken off the total carbs

I noticed that the word was spelled the English way too (fibre) not the USA way (fiber) so I suspect it is in UK packaging so has been taken off the total carbs already.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

The fiber is deducted from the total carbs to get net carbs. Some labels have the net carbs listed already and you dont have to do any figuring at all.

          Many thanks guys!

I don't know anyone who is doing atkins so its really great to get some advise from you all!

Yep, the nuts are packaged in the UK, so it could be net carbs listed...I think I will stick off nuts for the time being - have just discovered pork scratchings (I think they are called pork rinds in the US?) and they are brilliant for getting rid of those snack cravings

          Thanks again!

And a fab way to eat pork scratchings - eat them with cheese, AT THE SAME TIME - they are simply TO DIE FOR

I would agree with dbshaw, it sounds as if your craving salt and if thats the case, pork rinds, if you like them would probably do the trick or sour pickles. (Whoops, here comes 2big to tell us not to give into cravings, but rather fight them off)
Its really great that your adding new foods, but check out the list so you know what order to go in and understand the 5 rule. (Its up in FAQ) What we recommend is that you find new induction legal foods to try, new recipes and new snacks.
              8 Pounds, thats awesome. Congratulations.
