  • I need HELP!

I've been sticking to Atkins like glue for 5 weeks now and I have only lost 6 lbs! ANd probably no inches, since my clothes are still tight. Here is my normal menu, what am I doing wrong?

    Breakfast:
    eggs with no milk
    bacon
    water

    snack:
    peperoni
    water
    or some sliced cucumber

    lunch:
    salad - lettuce
    peperoni
    cucumber
    7-8 cherry tomatoes
    fresh sliced mushroom
    handful of cubed colby cheese
    water
    sometimes 1-2 pcs baked chicken
yesterday I had 2 pcs. pork spare ribs

    dinner:
    shrimp cocktail with sauce (alittle)
    water
    or more baked chicken
sometimes fresh broccoli with chedder cheese

I'm still so hungry and I'm getting discouraged. I've done this once before about 3 years ago and lost almost 60 lbs. I was bad and didn't stick with it, so I want to change my lifestyle now, but I'm getting discouraged.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

    Thank you,

Water intake? Exercise? Are you under stress, getting enough sleep? Diet wise, a lot of folks are going to tell you to reduce the cheese intake.. but I wanted to ask the other questions first!

      Re: I need HELP!

My water intake is about 4 - 6 12 oz glasses a day, sometimes more. I get about 7 hours on a normal nights sleep.

I luv my job, so no stress there, the husband can be a pain (LOL), and I have three kids (2 teenage girls, and a 10 yr old boy), so maybe I can blame them! LOL

I thought I was aloud about 3 to 4 oz of cheese a day? Some of my sauces might have sugar in them, would it be enough to be bad?

      Thanks for your help!

Leave out the tomatoes, since they have their own sugars, I don't ever eat tomatoes. The pepperoni might have hidden carbs, you have to be careful of coldcuts. The cocktail sauce has definately sugar in it, don't have it, try eating your shrimp with seafood seasoning instead. Hope this helps.

          Ok. Deeep breath.

May I recommend that you come over to the Second Time Around forum? We're all doing the Atkins woe again and are a really strong, supportive group.

When you go there, check out all of the stickies, and most especially the one called Slow Scales Second Time Around. You will find that what you are experiencing is pretty normal.

I myself have gone thru what you are. I didn't weigh for the first four weeks, and when I finally did, I was stunned that I had barely lost anything. The first time I did Atkins, I dropped a ton of pounds and inches, so I wasn't expecting it.

As for what you are eating, you seem to be consuming a lot of sodium in those peperonis. I would cut it back to one serving per day. The tomato sauce also should probably be reduced or eliminated. DEFINATELY do not eat ANYTHING with sugar in it, so look for a recipe on this board for cocktail sauce that is Atkins friendly.

Those cherry tomatos are not induction friendly. Eliminate them, too. Instead of lettuce, try spinach salad. Or fry some spinach in butter or olive oil until just slightly wilted, then sprinkle with either some feta cheese or some lemon juice.

You also MUST have your carbs throughout the day. I don't think you are getting enough veggies. 3 cups from the acceptable list, mind you! I do a veggie snack in mid-morning, then at lunch, then mid-afternoon, and some with dinner.

The last thing I'd like to point out is that you may not be eating enough FAT. What kind of dressing are you putting on your salad? When you have a cucumber for snack, are you eating it with something high in fat? If not, start now.

Do you use fitday.com? You should. It will allow you to keep track of your fat, protein and carb percentages so when you have trouble, you can see where you are falling short!!!!!

Finally, and this is important. Are you exercising?

            Re: I need HELP!

Tomatoes are just fine on induction, but they are higher in carb so watch the amount. I've eaten tomato since day one and never had an issue with it. *ALL* veggies have their own natural sugar, that's why they have a carb count.

I would add some veggies to your breakfast in the morning. Omelettes are divine for this purpose

I'd drop the pepperoni - or at least drop it back to a time or two a week. It's loaded with sodium which will cause water retention, and it is a processed meat product. Same applies for the bacon.

Watch how much cheese you're eating. Be sure to keep it to the 3-4oz a day. It's a really easy item to over do it on.

Overall, I think your lunch looks great. I would, however, add more fat to it. Dressing? Olive oil?

No cocktail sauce!. Try cooking your shrimp in garlic & butter. Good stuff, high in protein, and adds fat easily Make sure you're getting your total of 3 cups of veggies a day and spread them out. Broccoli is fabulous for you, but you've got a lot of other choices. How about some spaghetti squash with parm, butter, and fresh cracked pepper? Yum

When you're snacking, go for a solid mix of fat and protein. This is easily done, really. A couple of slices of roast beef with a bit of cheese and a dab of mayo is really a satisfying snack. Celery & some cream cheese dip is a great way to go. Deviled eggs are another great choice.

If you're hungry - EAT. There's no need for you to be hungry, and letting yourself be hungry is an invite for self sabotage. If you've used up your carbs for the day, head for the protein and fat

Your water intake is okay, but I'd be sure to be drinking a full glass before meals and before you snack. You'll find it helps curb your appetite as well.

You still didn't mention anything about exercise, so I'm curious about that too.

Tomatos are ok, but not as part of your 2 cups of leafy greens. And cherry tomatos PLUS tomato sauce PLUS cocktail sauce is waaaaaay too much at this point......

                Re: I need HELP!

We need more info from you: your start weight, current weight and goal weight.
A person will lose approx 5% to 10% of their desired amount in the first two weeks, so think back on how much you lost in the first two weeks and see if it's in sync with how much you need to lose.
                Have you read this yet?

Also, there's a sticky in this forum about how to post your menu....it's easier for us to review your menu when you say you had an ounce of cheese as opposed to a 'handful' and we can't tell if you're within your limits of veggies and cheese without having portion sizes included

Are you currently following Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, version 2002 (DANDR for short) or are you going on what you recall the Atkins diet to be from the first time you were on it? If you don't have DANDR, then please do get it and brush up on how it's done. That's the book we follow here on this site. I get the impression you have a good general idea of what the diet is all about, but you're not quite hitting the mark.

And as suggested, get a free account at www.fitday.com and see how your numbers add up. Here's a link to help you with that as well.

I agree with what the others said about being careful with sodium laden foods like bacon and pepperoni. Definitely cocktail sauce is not allowed because of the sugars. You need to spread the veggies out through the day to avoid an insulin spike by eating them all at one meal. That could be what's leaving you feeling hungry....that and the fact that you don't seem to be eating anything much in the way of fat.

Okay, I have signed up for Fitday. I have just begun exercising. I have been doing at least 60 sit-up and 50 leg-lifts on each leg. It's not much now, but I have very weak back muscles (probably from being over weight), and sit-ups usually pull my muscles.

I do have a sit-up aid, (one of those machines you hold while lying down, to not strain your back)

I will now cut the peperoni, and add more veggies.

I have been posting to review my menu for menu inspiration, not knowing it made a difference this was the second time around. I definatly need the encouragement, I'm still getting no where, just frustrated. I will meet you there!

                  Thanks everyone!
