  • Question......

If a box says on the front of it "Only 3 net Carbs" and the side of the box says "Total Carbs 9 g" is it good? I always follow the side of the box because I feel safer. Is it ok to say it only has 3 carbs????????

    Re: Question......

What is the food in question? If it has 9 total carbs with 0g sugar and 7g fiber, then 3 net carbs is acceptable, given that the food is acceptable for your phase. If the other 7g are sugar alcohols (the label should say), then the "net" carb is probably not very accurate.

Hmmm...try to stay away from boxed anything. You should really be eating fresh as much as possible......

        Re: Question......

Actually, I was looking at the Carb Smart (Breyers) Fudge Bars. I was giving it as an example cuz I never understood that you could take total carbs of something and minus the fiber. Just beware of the sugars. Do I have it now????

And, yes I'm on induction and I can't have them, I know.....I've only been on it 3 days now and I've lost 4pds, which I'm very happy with, I'm just trying to learn more. Thanks so much for responding!!!!

          Re: Question......

Yep, when you are looking at labels, you can subtract fiber from the total carbs. That is because fiber has a very low impact on blood sugar and generally passes right out of our systems.

I think some of the carbs in the Carb Smart products may be fiber (for example, a lot of the ice creams with almonds will have fiber). The rest are usually sugar alcohols. Ice cream is generally lower in SA than stuff like the SF candy, and even in a low content they can cause extreme gastric distress if eaten in excess! So if you decide to try those products in a later phase (the ice cream, for example, on the dairy rung of OWL), be careful!

            Re: Question......

put down the bars and step away from the box.

Total carbohydrates tells you the total amount of caurbohydratwes in that box. By definition fiber has to go in your mouth and come out the other end unmetabolizes so we can subtract the fiber carbs cause they don't do anything to your blood sugar or fat building.

other types of carbohydrates no matter what they are are metabolized and therefore can not be discounted. some folk think they can get away with not counting glycerin and sugar alcohols and hdrolyzed starches too those are the boxes that say net carbs on them.

the sugar you need to worry about is the sugar in the ingredients lists as the sugar in the nutritional label can be natural sugars like those in fruits and veggies.
