  • Induction Menu Help

    Hello all,

I am new to the Atkins diet, I am just starting the wonderful induction stage, and I was wondering if somebody could look over my day 1 menu and tell me if it fits in the plan.

    Breakfast

4 eggs scrambled with 4 oz of bacon, 1 cup of cheddar cheese(I love cheese!!!!)

    Lunch

    (2) 4 ounce hamburger patties topped with 2 oz of habanero cheese, 2 cups of raw spinach salad with 2 tblsp of blue cheese dressing

    Dinner

    (2) 4 oz hamburger patties topped with 2 oz of habanero cheese, 2 cups of raw spinach salad with 2 tblsp of blue cheese dressing

toss in about 80 oz of water

also did 50 sit-ups, and ran 2 miles today

I would really appreciate any advice you can give me

Well, for starters you are way overdoing the cheese! Bummer, I know. I love cheese too. But you are supposed to limit it to 4oz a day.

I made copies of the Rules of Induction and the Acceptable Food List for Induction and carried them with me folded in my purse, hung a copy in the kitchen and in the study. Refer to them often and they will come second nature to you. You may want to use Fitday.com to keep you informed of how you are doing, as well. It gives you a chance for a reality check to ensure your fat/protein/carb ratio are in check.

Also, isn't spinach on the one cup list vs. lettuce that is on the 2 cup?

            You are right, Lynsey.

And even though some people think Dr Atkins should have put it on the 2-3 cup list you are supposed to have a maximum of 3 cups of veggies in total on induction, so adding your habanero (peppers I assume) you are quite a bit over that

Apart from that it looks fine - if not a little repetitive.

As to amounts, as long as you are eating till no longer hungry and not because the food is on your plate it seems Ok.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Great advice has been given so far. I'd just like to reiterate the fat/protein/carb ratios. It looks like you might be really high on the fat side unless you are using super lean hamburger patties. Mostly those are pretty fatty though. You might want to check into using Fitday.com to track your food intake. For your weight, you might also be taking in a lot of calories. I know you're not supposed to worry too much about calories in induction, but you do have to keep it within reason....good job though!

                Re: Induction Menu Help

                Hello,

I am a fairly experienced Atkins Dieter. Lost about 50 ounds 5 years ago and after falling off the wagon, I am back on it. I am pretty sure cheese is not even in the Induction phase? I think it is allowed during ongoing weigh loss...I have found that bacon also is cured with sugar.

Anyway Induction is the strictest phase and I would not eat as much cheese as you are eating...

                  Re: Induction Menu Help

Tomcat, only certain cheeses are forbidden completely on induction, they are allowwed on rung2. (cottage cheese, "diet" cheese, cheese spreads, whey cheese)

Up to 4 oz of hard/aged cheese is permitted.

The ratios mentioned previously, in case someone is confused at this point, are 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% net carbs, % being of the total day's calories. Also, you should have some of each with every meal if possible.
You are waaaaaay over on the cheese with about 1 1/2 cups total and veggies are limited to 3 cups.

A good place to get a feel for a proper induction menu is to go to www.fitday.com . Registration is free, and you can play around with menu combinations and see total carbs, fiber (which you subtract from the total to get up to 200g), and the ratios. You can choose different serving sizes by typing in the box beside what they suggest (ie, if cream comes up 1 cup, type .25 over the one for 1/4 cup)
