LOL, good question. It's what I love to crack open & dip my celery in! However, the ingredients sound awful but it tastes good. The Armour Potted Meat label reads:

INGREDIENTS: Mechanically Seperated Chicken, Beef Tripe, Water, Salt, less than 2%: Mustard, Natural Flavorings, Dried Garlic, Vinegar, Dextrose, Sodium Erythorbate, Sodium Nitrate.

From the website link I listed above: Mechanically Separated Poultry is a paste-like poultry product produced by forcing crushed bone and tissue through a sieve or similar device to separate bone from tissue. Mechanically separated poultry has been used in poultry products since 1969 after the National Academy of Sciences found it safe for use. In 1995 the final rule on mechanically separated poultry said it was safe to use without restrictions. However, it must be labeled as "mechanically separated chicken or turkey" in the ingredient statement. The final rule became effective Nov. 1996.

Ummm, yum Sadie! So, is it alright for me to be eating it (as long as I don't think of the process by which it is made)?

Personally, I am not sure as it seems a little too high in salt. I have however, sent a pm to one of my American colleague moderators / admin to have a look for you, as I am not 100% sure of some your foods. (I am in England you see).

Yes, I seem to love salty food. Is this something I should limit on the Atkin's diet even though I have low blood pressure? What should I limit my sodium intake to? Also, can you recommend other "snacks" that might be better for me? Thanks for your help, Rich! You are absolutely adorable. You've made quite a transformation!

                  Thanks for your kind comments.

Salt is a problem on this way of eating, as it can cause awful water retention.

A handy snack that you could eat (and its still one of my favourites even now) is ham with cream cheese spread on it and then rolled up. Lovely!

What's potted meat? Rich, that's something we brought over from England during the colonial era! It's sorta like your potted shrimps, but instead of shrimps they use unmentionable pork/beef/chicken parts and instead of butter they use some other sort of oil/fat.

Anyhow, it's pretty high in salt and I'm not sure what the carb count is on that. So you might want to watch that you don't retain water from that amount of salt.

Also, your green bean amount is alittle too high. Green beans (AKA string beans) are a "1 cup" vegetable. And be aware that while Splenda is allowed it is limited to 3 servings daily. So depending what the serving size is on the water, 1 serving of that counts towards the 3 sweetener allowance. And of course, only water counts towards the minimum 64 ounce daily.

On the flavored Splenda water drinks it says it has 0 carbs. However, I do understand that they need to be counted for at least 1 carb. Could they possibly have a higher carb count for Atkins that isn't reflected on the label (since it doesn't include the 1 carb either)?

Potted meat has 0 carbs but tons of salt. It looks like I definitely need to cut this out. The ham & cream chz roll ups sound like a great alternative. I might add celery or a dill pickle in the middle for some crunch & extra taste.

Okay, I dying to know more about the flavored drinks because I want to do this right.

                          Re: Menu Review, please.

When I started Atkins, I e-mailed the Atkins Center about the sugarfree sodas and how to count them. They sent me an e-mail that said to count 1 serving as 1 carb. Other ADBB members e-mailed soda companies and asked about the carb count. The companies swore that the sucralose they use is liquid sucralose, which does not contain carb-fillers like the packeted/granular stuff.

So, if you want to count those drinks as 1 net carb, go for it---especially if you have difficulties with portion control.

however, Dr. Atkins wrote that the artificial sweeteners are limited to 3 servings daily and that since more products are being artificially sweetened these products need to be counted as well.

So, 1 serving of an artificially sweetened food/drink counts as one of the 3 daily sweetener amounts.

To add to what not2late said about the drinks - each bottle or can should state how many servings is in it - typically a 12 ounce can = 1.5 servings, a 16 ounce bottle=2 servings.
Ao as long as you count each serving of the drink as one of your 3 servings of sweetener per day you should be fine.

BTW I often eat celery spread with either cream cheese or pate!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Rich unless British ham is made differently the average ham according to the USDA food lists has 1304 for 3.5 ounces the same amount of potted meat would have 956 so potted meat would have less soduim then your ham suggested snack.
