  • I need a sugar check in smoked salmon

I have a few packs of this smoked salmon, and I need some help with the sugar content before I eat it. I already had run in with a sausage with corn syrup solids, an 8 pound regain, just like that! I don't want to do that again. I ate this same brand of smoked salmon the first time I was on Atkins and didn't have a problem, but I'm not so sure about it now. I'm serious about doing my best, losing and keeping it off, so will give it away if I need to, or save it until the exp date and try it then. Any suggestions?

    1. Because of the sugar, Is it allowed on Induction and/or Extended Induction?

    2. Because of the sugar, is it allowed at any time on Atkins?

    3. Is this considered a lot of sugar?

    4. Is this comparable to a package of sliced lunch meat?

    Thanks.

You know before you posted I would have never thought to look at Smoked Salmon ingredients. Its the third ingredient so that is a little scary and I would say to stay on the side of caution that you don't have it while in induction, and then tread carefully afterward.
Boy, does all smoked salmon have sugar? Thanks for the heads up

Re: I need a sugar check in smoked salmon

Thanks for the great advice desertthorn...I need to use caution.

The 'sell by...' date is 11/17/06, so I'll keep it until then and eat it carefully in a small amount to test it and weigh for a few days in a row to see what the scale does. It rarely hits that day or the day after for me. I'll report back here how it goes. LOL I could be wrong here and probably am, but the reason I wonder about the sugar in different meats, like this salmon, is because I "think" I remembering Dr. Atkins say that the sugar in bacon is different than the sugar in sausage because of the way it cooks, burns off...I don't remember exactly what. I have to find this in the book.

I asked my husband about the sugars in meat. I married the meat man; how perfect for the Atkins' diet! lol He owned and operated a custom cutting and wrapping meat shop, then managed a couple of natural health food co-op meat departments.

He said all smoked salmon or meats do not need sugar at all, and it's all for flavoring; there is no other reason for it, like the sodium nitrates he used. They are in this smoked salmon because it is used as a curing agent to keep the slow cooked, low heat-dried meat preserved during smoking or drying, so it doesn't sour or deteriorate, and make the consumer very sick.

He used to make batches of sausage, jerkey dried salami, smoked turkeys and said he used lots of brown sugar, even for the turkeys! That's one to watch for...most people think turkey is sugar free. He made vats of corned beef and said he used a tons of brown sugar. It would have been different for our meat if we had been on Atkins! Oh, the memories of these meats...those sasauge making parties were so much fun in the early 80's.

yep the only reason you got sugar is for flavor. rinse the meat off the first time you try it and get rid of some of the sugar. and be real careful about your eating that day watch for any triggering from the sweet taste.

since DH does meats why don't you get him to make you some sugasr free sausages.

Can you freeze it? It should last much longer than the expiration date. That'll give you some more time if you need it.

I'm with Lynne on this, I would never have thought to have read the label on smoked salmon. Wow. I wonder if this is an American thing or a world wide thing. I need to check at lunchtime in the local supermarket for my own curiosity.

The sugar and salt helps to draw the moisture out of the fish before the smoking process.

I find that it is the extra special or finest salmon that has sugar in it. There is a lot of smoked salmon that does not contain sugar. I eat smoked salmon most days.

Kept some smoked planks of Nova for over 2 years, and it was absolutely fabulous!!! (Just make sure there's no air in the package and package is airtight - no just wrapped in foil or plastic - before freezing)

Re: I need a sugar check in smoked salmon

Babs, I just came on here 2 days ago and I sought out this place because of the issues I had this time with induction and gaining weight. I have been using smoked salmon too and never thought to check the sugar until this morning (interesting that this came up on the same day). I thought about it because I went to the store to buy a smoked turkey and then suddenly remembered all of the additives that are injected in them, so I read the label. I didn't buy it, then on the way home thought about my salmon.

I could be wrong, but I believe that heat smoked salmon does not have the sugar as the cold smoked salmon does. You know, heat smoked is a full fillet and flaky and the cold smoked is thin sliced and oily. I think I will freeze mine now too, until after I have been in OWL a while.

Due to ongoing medical tests that require radioactive meds and glucose, I am holding off restarting induction until the tests are completed next week, but I am acting everyday as if I am still on it, so I do not have to get back in the swing mentally. Thanks for this post.

Re: I need a sugar check in smoked salmon

                        Hi Babs

You are right, the cold smoked salmon does have sugar in it as part of the curing process, it also has a large amount of salt (usually double the sugar), so I make sure to limit my smoked salmon intake - hot smoked salmon as Pamela points out, does not have sugar in unless it is used in the marinade, so as long as you check the lable it should be fine.

Re: I need a sugar check in smoked salmon

The sugar on my label of smoked salmon from Trader Joe's Market stopped me dead in my tracks this morning. I was going to have smoked salmon with my eggs...but when I saw the sugar listed in the ingredients I had salsa and cheese on my eggs instead. I didn't want to take the chance on induction......Rinsing sounds like a good idea. I will try that...Thanks for that suggestion!
Breakfast was still great without the salmon.......2 eggs, 1 tbspn cream, 1 oz cheddar cheese, 2 tbsp salsa, 3 strips of bacon....How can you go wrong with that? Delish!
