  • Hi again, I had a question for a snack on induction!

I like to make these snacks of ham and cheese roll ups ..the only thing i'm concern with, is that I heard ham was something to be careful with on induction and I just wanted something to tell me if the ham i'm using is something to stop consuming.

I buy my ham from walmart, the big packs by "Great Value" which i believe is a product of walmart - it's Cooked Ham with water added...the nutritional facts is as followed:

    Calories: 30
    Calories from fat: 10
    Total Carb: 0
    Sodium: 370mg
    Sugar: 0
    Protein: 6g

    The ingredients is:
ham cured with water, salt, dextrose, sodium lactate, sodium phosphate, sodium diacetate, sodium ascorbate, sodium nitrite

If anyone can give their advice, it will be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Ham is very tricky - I have not found any yet that eat - except for the big expensive holiday kind that you bake at home.

Dextrose is a sugar - we have to look for that on labels. I have even found it in Prime Rib Rub (a seasoning for meat!)

    Good Luck!

Found more info for you on labels:

This is from this thread: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=5918

      SUGAR AND STARCH/GRAINs
Look out for sugar and starches in the ingredients. Starches can be called flour, corn flour, masa, cornstarch, potato flour, potato starch, bread crumbs, etc. Basically, if it sounds like a grain or grain product, put it back on the shelf.

Sugar has similar profile. It can be called a lot of things, including:

      Barley Sugar
      Brown Rice Syrup
      Corn sweetener
      Corn Syrup
      Corn syrup solids
      Dextrin
      Dextrose
      Fruit juice concentrate (juice concentrate)
      Fructose
      Galactose
      Glucose
      High fructose corn syrup
      Honey
      Invert sugar
      Lactose
      Levulose
      Maltose
      Malt
      Malt syrup
      Maple syrup
      Modified corn starch
      Molasses
      Sorghum
      Sucrose
Sugar (all including, brown, raw, turbinado, powdered, table, caster, fine, etc.)

Hi - You are very welcome!
Maybe in place of ham you could find prosciutto (ingredients: pork, salt) instead! I tried it but didn't like it, but I'm not a big fan of ham either.

And I noticed in your signature that you are doing FANTASTIC!!

          Keep up the good work!

Re: Hi again, I had a question for a snack on induction!

            hi Netty
I am a bit late chiming in but wanted to ask - the nutrition info you gave, was it for one slice of the ham? In USA they can round the numbers down so they often say something has 0 carbs per serving if it has up to 0.49999999 carbs and 'under 1 carb' if it has up to 0.99999999 carbs.
So if you are having only one serving, you could count '0' carbs if you want (I would count half of one carb myself just to be safe) but if you have more than one 'serving' of something that has some form of sugar listed as an ingredient (like lactose) you really need to count nearly half of one carb per serving.
If one serving = one slice and you have 4 slices then that is nearly 2 carbs!!

We are lucky if we live outside north America as our labelling tends to state counts for a larger amount like 100 grams (3.5 ounces) so the carb counts are much more accurate and easier to work out just how many carbs are in a small amount of anything.
For instance, the mayonnaise I use has 0.9 carbs per 100 grams making a couple of tablepoonsworth (about one ounce) a very small carb count - about 0.257 carbs.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Yeah, Gina is right Elizellen - you do look amazing! and lucky for you, it seems easier to keep track on your nutritional facts! It does seem tricky, but i think its for every 3 slices...but i tend to eat two slices at a time....but from what you and Stella have told me, my safest bet is just to not eat ham at all or maybe the two slices i have and thats it for the day - it's sort of a childhood snack that was given to me and I thought it worked great with Atkins, especially during induction...Sorry if I took long to respond to Stella it's been a crazy day today and it's now that i finally signed on line! Oh, and thanks for the compliment..it really makes me feel like what i'm doing is worth something!

Re: Hi again, I had a question for a snack on induction!

I haven't ever been *that* picky about ham. Now, I don't go buying honey ham, or the like...but cooked ham and boiled ham, etc. I've never worried about the trivial amount of sugar that is used in the curing of the ham....as it is used in the curing of the bacon.

ONE caveat to this though...processed meats such as ham, tend to have lots of sodium...and of course, the sugars and Nitrates which Dr. A warns us about. If you are having a couple slices a day in your roll ups, or in a lettuce "sandwich" then enjoy. But you don't want to be eating these for all of your meals in a day. You want to throw them in every once in a while and use fresh meats as much as possible.

I love those ham roll ups. My grandmother used to make them when I was a kid too. So, one day I'm in the kitchen making them and my stepchildren were here. They see what I'm doing and start wrinkling up their nose and saying "Ewwwww". I told them don't knock it till you try it. (Both of them are really good at trying things thanks to their good ole stepmomma Joy) Now, they both are always wanting to make them (and of course eat them)! LOL
