Canadian bacon...quite a bit different from regular bacon. It's much higher in protein and pretty low in fat (comparatively).

It's just one of those things that illustrates the differences between South Beach and Atkins. SB tries to reduce the fat as well as some carbs. This plan was devised around the 65/30/5 stuff for induction.

If you have a breakfast of 2 real eggs with the canadian bacon, it'd be 55/42/3 2g carbs. This would make it easier to get the fat you want in throughout the rest of the day.

Anyway, just a preference and just telling you the basis for my opinion. I'd much rather have the real thing than the substitute.

So Frenchfri....get on that book! Make sure you check out those forums so you know the limits on veggies and the other guidelines for the induction period.

Re: Okay Dont Yell Or Say Get The Book

Actually it's the carbs that make you feel bloated. Fat makes you feel satisfied--I eat LESS when my meal has more fat, because I don't have the desire/craving for more food. And fat tastes GOOD. Yum, I don't know how I ever lived without butter before.

LOL! No...actually, when I ate carbs I used to feel very lethargic, bloated, gassy, and always over-full. Now with all the natural, low carb foods I eat I feel very good most of the time. The first couple weeks you might feel crappy as your body gets used to it, but after that it's great. Every now and then I go off and eat like crazy...when I do that it reminds me why I follow this WOE.

Yup - twice while I have been on this diet I did the same thing and had a weekend of horrific carbs and I felt disgustingly bloated for about a week afterwards until the induction kicked my energy level right back in.

NO diet has ever given me the amount of energy that Atkins has. Along with my family I've done weight watchers, the stupid lemonade cayenne pepper starve yourself plan, and the zone. Atkins is the only one I've ever seen the people I love lose over a hundred pounds on and keep it off.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Karen, my cholesterol dropped as well. I was on a medication that required me to get it checked ever 2-6 weeks from aug 05-oct 06. just before atkins, it hit 497 (and that was following a "heart" diet recommened by my dr that was full of grains, etc etc.) last time (oct06) my good cholesterol was fabulous, the bad stuff, LOW LOW LOW. (I dont have the exact numbers in front of me).

I ate lowfat for 4 years. The minute i started Atkins, I ate a ribeye, medium rare (fat included) and Ive never eaten anythign I enjoyed more LOL.

Re: Okay Dont Yell Or Say Get The Book

Not really if you think about it. We eat mostly natural foods containing fats which are natural and not processed. These fats can help reduce your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol. Also, the fact that our bodies are using fat for fuel allows stored fat to be burned and removed from the body. Ketones are the evidence of that.

Have you started the book yet? Reading the book will educate you on why we are doing what we are doing and the reason that these things work.

This is true - IF you are talking about the last 25 years...that is the length of time the low fat meme of FAT is terrible, red meat will kill you, butter is the devil has been in our lives. Funny that that is about the same length of time during which the obesity epidemic has ballooned, isn't it? Think about how people ate WAAAAAAAAAAY back...you know, before there was a grocery store every two blocks....they ate what they could kill (MEAT) and what they could grow or that grew wild (fruits/veggies/seeds/nuts)...that's the way the human body was designed to work best I can figure...it's all the processed junk on the store shelves with ingredients that can't be pronounced that are dangerous...not the oh so natural skin of a chicken or butter made from Bessie's milk.

Atkins allows the reintroduction of pretty much everything but refined sugars and white flour...over the course of OWL and pre-maintenance. It's not all about 14 days induction. Hope you are enjoying reading the book. Best of luck on your journey no matter what you decide!
