  • Feedback on Days One and Two Requested.

Or days zero and day one. It doesn't really matter, I intended to start Atkins yesterday and gave it a shot. I'm in the Induction phase but am planning a three week induction phase to be sure I did it clean.

    Day One:

Two McDonalds Breakfast Burrito without the tortilla.
    Jimmy Dean Three Cheese Omlette.
Steak and Cheese with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and a few tomato slices.
    Two "farmers sodas"
    Two Atkins Advantage Caramel Bars.

    Day Two (So far)

Three hard boiled eggs (two without the yolks)
One Atkins Advantage Oatmeal Raisin bar.

I'm doing the water thing well and shying away from caffiene and artificial sweeteners. I've reigned the use of them in quite a bit, but not completely.

There it is and I look forward to your input. Thanks.

Re: Feedback on Days One and Two Requested.

    1) eat the yolks of the eggs unless you just don't like them. There is no reason to try to limit your egg consumption except for satisfying your hunger.
    2) Ditch the atkins bars. They are full of ingredients that are NOT on the acceptable food list (oatmeal isn't allowed until the grains rung and raisins are not allowed until the fruits rung. AND they've got sugar alcohols which doesn't help tame the sweet tooth. They also have been known to make people stall in their weight loss. Dr. Atkins said in the 2002 edition of DANDR (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) that the bars were acceptable in emergency situations when no other alternative was available.
    3) Eat real meats, vegetables and cheeses. 3 cups of vegetables per day are allowed and STRONGLY ENCOURAGED during induction. After induction, you add MORE vegetables.

You really should start by reading a copy of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (Aka DANDR at ADBB). Make sure it's the completely revised (2002) edition. Everything is there; you can often find it at thrift shops if not at a local book seller. I have seen them for a quarter at rummage sales.

Reading the "stickies" in the Induction forum will help you learn the ropes as well.

Welcome to the board. You will find plenty of advice and encouragement here to get you going to a healthier you. I've seen members come with DiabetesII that no longer have to medicate, or claim to actually be cured. (Though that is of course so long as they stay with this WOL). People come to quit addictions at the same time they start Atkins and succeed; you've already got the hardest part out of the way, so your ahead! Congratulations!

Now, from what I see, your diet is out of kilter for induction. I don't know what is in McDonalds Breakfast Burrito without the tortilla or Jimmy Dean Three Cheese Omlette without looking them up. Chances are there are added fillers in both which you want to avoid. You can use www.fitday.com to enter daily menus or just plan ahead, and it tells you your total carbs and food type percentages. You can have up to 20 net cabs (total carbs less fiber grams). You want your day's intake to be roughly 30% protein, 5% carbs during induction, 65% fat, which will decrease as you increase carbs in OWL phase.

How much Steak and Cheese with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and a few tomato slices did you have?
What are "farmers sodas" ? Try a bit more detail with another menu post, and include your water and other drinks, supplements, quantities, and included ingredients/added condiments.

Also, I'm afrad you should forego the Atkins bars during induction. Grains, fruits and nuts are not allowed until OWL.

Hate to give them up, they actually tasted good. I remember a time when low carb protein bars didn't taste so good.

They were on this list so I figured it'd be okay. I'm coming to the suspicion that since the good Dr. has passed the people who own the Atkins name have somewhat corrupted the Dr's plan and rules to sell products. Either way they got me.

Ahhh yes. Atkins Nutritionals is a corporation that was bought from Dr. A years ago. They have selling you some low carb food product (we call it Frankenfood) in mind rather than your health. Keep in mind, they are in it for their pocketbook, not your health. Dr. Atkins addresses those bars in his book and says they can be used in an EMERGENCY situation.

Anyway, thumbs up on the double cheeseburger...make sure to eat the lettuce and tomato with it, or have a salad. Mushrooms are good too. You want to make sure to spread veggies out over the day.

Re: Feedback on Days One and Two Requested.

Hey, about your breakfast day 1, Here is what Mcdonalds says is in their breakfast burrito:

"Flour Tortilla, Sausage & Scrambled Egg Mix, Pasteurized Process American Cheese"

Doesn't sound too bad right? Now here is what is in the "sausage and scrambled egg mix

              Sausage & Scrambled Egg Mix:
Pre-cooked egg product [eggs, nonfat dry milk, soybean oil, food starch-modified, salt, natural black pepper flavor (plant source), extractives of black pepper, xanthan gum, citric acid, natural (dairy and botanical source) and artificial butter flavor, annatto extract (color)], pre-cooked sausage [pork, water, dextrose, spices, corn syrup solids, sugar, monosodium glutamate, BHA, propyl gallate, citric acid (protect flavor)], vegetable blend (tomatoes, green chilies, onions, calcium chloride, citric acid). CONTAINS: EGG AND MILK

Mmmmmm yummy! The milk, corn syrup solids and sugar make this an immediate no for induction regardless of everything else. Skip this nausiating mix and go for straight bacon and eggs cooked at home.

I looked for, but couldn't find, ingredient lists for the jimmy dean 3 cheese omelette. If you have a package around I'd be interested in seeing what they put in there.

Re: Feedback on Days One and Two Requested.

Thanks Grant, yeah I'm throwing yesterday out as 'day 0'. Okay first step, but doesn't count.

The Jimmy Dean things have ... well here's a link to some nutritional info ...
There are 290 calories in 1 omelette (4.3 oz) of Jimmy Dean Three Cheese Omelets. You'd need to walk 81 minutes to burn 290 calories. Visit CalorieKing to see calorie count and nutrient data for all portion sizes.

If McDonalds it must be, then Scrambled Eggs will be the way to go, i'll bring my own cilantro.

                boonie,

Yeah it wasn't on the acceptable foods list at all, I got thrown off by the "atkins products for induction". Thanks.

Re: Feedback on Days One and Two Requested.

Hey, did you see anywhere on calorie king where they list the actual ingredients? That is what I was hoping to find.

I hate to be a bummer but if you were hoping that the scrambled eggs were pure eggs then I'm afraid you are going to be disapointed. They don't however have the sugar, milk, and corn syrup solids, they do however have soy which I beleive is considered a legume.

                  Scrambled Eggs (2):
Pasteurized whole eggs with sodium acid pyrophosphate, citric acid and monosodium phosphate (all added to preserve color), nisin (preservative). Prepared with liquid margarine: Liquid soybean oil, water, partially hydrogenated cottonseed and soybean oils, salt, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, soy lecithin, mono- and diglycerides, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservative), artificial flavor, citric acid, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene (color). CONTAINS: EGG AND SOY LECITHIN

My wife was eating McDonalds for breakfast nearly every day thinking that it was OK. She wasn't losing much weight so we looked into it a few weeks ago. After seeng the above (and by the way, you'll find similiar problems with the chicken sandwiches) she stopped going there for anything but the hamburger patties and she started losing weight much faster.

Looks like you've saved me a 10 minute detour on the way into work every morning along with the frustration that comes with not doing induction right.

                      Thanks.

As for the Jimmy Dean stuff, I'm not sure. I've been buying stuff off the shelf and been wary of sugars or high fructose corny syrups and such since January. Either way, it doesn't sound like a safe bet and I'd be better off without them probably.

So, last one in the box was eaten yesterday and the box thrown out.

I scramble a couple eggs in the morning while I'm getting ready for work. It doesn't take very long at all.

OR I'll boil a dozen eggs and have them in the fridge for a quick on the go breakfast.

That's what I did this morning. Actually I looked in the fridge and saw a dozen eggs whose expiration date had passed. Worried they'd go to waste, I boiled them all and that was breakfast this morning.

                          Okay ... here goes ...

For work, we have a fridge too, but I purchased one of those convenient microwavable omelette dish things. AND .... EggBeaters.

One serving, .25 cup has a gram of carb, no sugar. None of that Soy Lecithin stuff Grant was talking about etc.. .etc..

What's the overall opinion on EggBeaters here ?

Heres a thread I found on the subject, seems like they are OK only worry is that they are low in fat and high in protein you have to be careful not to throw your fat/carbs/protein ratio out of whack.
