  • Starting today with Induction

    Dear Fellow Dieters,

Would like your comments on my Induction menu plan:

    Breakfast
    3 Scrambled Eggs + 1 tomato + herbs

    Lunch
Spaghetti sauce (home-made, w/o sugar and only fresh ingredients such as onion, garlic, 1 bell pepper, minced beef/pork, fresh flesh tomatoes, fresh herbs), served with a couple of olives.

    Other alternatives for breakfast:
egg omelette (2 eggs) with an option of cheese/oyster mushrooms/tomato

    Lunch/Dinner
Steamed broccoli/eggplant/zucchini/celery/tomato/bell pepper/cauliflower with some old cheddar cheese richly sprinkled over it and to complete with tuna fish, canned, on water or a chicken leg fried in its own fat.

Since I want my snacks to be vegetables and still have to stick to 2-3 cups of vegetables, I have in mind, 1 cup of vegetables for lunch, 1 for dinner and 1 for snacking.

    Snacks
    piece of cucumber/carrot

Will of course drink a lot of spring water.

I would like to know if I can also take plain yoghurt as an alternative meal for breakfast/dinner w/o anything added. I have to go to my university study and on and around the campus there is no proper food available (cannot call McDonalds proper food, eh?)

I have started my Induction today. I did it before about 7 years ago with success. I built up a lot of additional fat (now about 190 lbs) ever since. My target is 130 lbs (65 kgs) and want to lose 25 lbs before end of December.

I am very energetic normally, walk fairly a lot to/at/from work (about 3-5 kms). I walk my dogs when I am free to for about ½ hour, but that depends on if I have time (otherwise they can run in our big garden)

    Still have a few questions:
    1. Any alternative suggestions for simple meals?
    2. Can I use plain yoghurt?
    3. Given the fact I have high energy levels already and don’t want to feel weak, I think I will balance the no. of carbs each day between 20 and 30. Can I?
    4. How much approximately in grams are 3 cups?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions and help.

do you have the book? Be prepared that the first two or three days you will feel like your coming down with a cold. You will not feel weak after this point in fact your energy level will go up. The only dairy you are suppose to eat is a small amount of cheese daily. yoghurt is illegal on this diet during induction. Also watch the carb content on tomatos they are technically a fruit and therefore not allowed. Check out www.atkins.com it has a carb calculator on it and I lived by that thing for the first two weeks. It sounds like its hard to find choices to eat but you will get use to it and come up with creative ideas. good luck

      Thanks for your comment.
However, plain yoghurt is posted as 10 carbs. I don't see the ratio behind that we can eat cheese but not yoghurt. Both are dairy products and additionally cheese is normally quite salty.

Tomatoes can be all sorts (some are sweeter than others) but 1 should be around 4 carbs.

That feeling about the first 2 days will pass me, since I didn't have that problem last time either. I am not a sugar junkie and I already eat a lot of home-made food. I just need to shape up and watch the meals.

Yogurt is not allowed. During induction only specific aged hard cheeses are allowed, and no more than 3-4oz a day. When you hit the dairy rung, you can add in yogurt, but to do so beforehand isn't Atkins Induction. With 3-4oz of the allowed cheese, sodium intake isn't going to be an issue - unless you're highly sensitive. If you brush up on the book, the rationale behind it is explained quite well.

Tomatoes *are* on the "other allowed veggies (1 cup per day) list. Keep it there and you should be fine.

You may not have had that problem last time, but it doesn't mean you won't this time. Just beware and don't be surprised if Induction Flu does strike. If it doesn't...then woohoo!

Surf the recipe/menu forums to get ideas. You'll find tons of them. You'll also find quite a bit in the Journals and Journal Stats sections. Add to that that there are about a billion low-carb recipe sites and you're good to go. Another great place to check out is Linda's Recipes : http://genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html

          2. Can I use plain yoghurt?
Answered above. - But in short again, Nope.

Not if you're following induction. Induction is 20 net grams of carb a day (carb content minus fiber). You'll likely not suffer decreased energy levels anyway - you stated before that Induction Flu didn't kick you in the butt before - and if thats the case, there's no need to tweak what works. In 4 weeks you can be up to 30 grams a day and will have followed Atkins as written.

Of course, you do what you want/need to do, but we at ADBB would advise you follow DANDR as written. Then there's no room for or

          4. How much approximately in grams are 3 cups?
It depends on what you fill those cups with as it can vary greatly. If you don't have a fitday account yet, I'd strongly suggest you get one.

This will vary according to which vegetables you choose. One cup of lettuce is much less in weight than one cup of green beans!

One of our members (soliwit) worked out the weight of one cup and fractions of a cup of the induction list of vegetables and posted it in the 14-day forum so those of us who prefer to weigh our veggies can calculate how much of each is allowed. Here is a link to that post

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

              Re: Starting today with Induction

Oh, and I forgot to add bitter gourd/melon to my Induction.

The problem with most of the 'permitted' vegetables on the list is that most imported vegetables are very very expensive so I have to resort to local veggies. Pak choi is out of the question given its high level of pesticides (I am sure Dr. Atkins hasn't thought of that). Forget about organic foods here: it is still a starting fashion.

So I have only available: lettuce, oyster mushrooms (no button ones here), cucumber (the Chinese version), peppers (I guess this means bell peppers) and celery. Plus now the bitter gourd.
No wonder I need to use veggies such as tomato and broccoli, given in small amounts.

Even cheese is a luxury here, with all being imported. On the other hand, olives are very cheap, so I added that to the Induction.
If I can drink lemon/lime juice, I guess I can also drink apple vinaigre (it doesn't say what vinaigre, so I guess this one is allowed).

For the rest a lot of mineral/spring water and Chinese green tea (I drink a lot of Iron Buddha and Jasmine).

              Any comments?
