  • Am I doing this right?

Yesterday in the little chat thing some of you recommended getting a scale, instead of using a measuring cup.
Now that I'm trying to prep myself for OWL, I've decided that I HAVE to measure my veggies. Now, today I'm using my handy-dandy scale.

One cup is eight ounces, right? That's nearly all of the zucchini!!! Am I doing this right? Am I measuring incorrectly. It's so much more food...it's strange.

    Thanks!

Ive never done it this way, it was Brook that said it right? you might need to PM her...

as long as you dont go over your 20 carbs youre good, Dr A changed it to cups as he knew that was the best way he could guarantee that people didnt go over the limit...

so if youre going by weights, what does the carb count come out?

Okay, I can't figure out Fitday.
But I googled it and 5oz of zucchini has 3 carbs and 1 fiber, so in eight ounces it should have about 3.5? So it's totally legal...I love zucchini!!!
If my math is wrong please please please tell me!

There is a thread on the induction forum that lists all the veggies on the induction lists with the weight per cup and fractions of a cup that Soliwit worked out and posted for us.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

BTW the cup measures fluid ounces, not weight ounces which is why all veggies have different amounts listed per cup.
For other veggies and foods not allowed on induction you can find out the weight per cup from the USDA website
            http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

You can also download a pdf file with the same info for use when offline

Re: Am I doing this right?

              There's a HUGE difference, isn't there?!!

You have Fitday, right? Do you have FitdayPC? (just easier if you do)

Before you actually eat anything, sit down with Fitday and enter in what you want to eat, fiddle with the amounts and see what the actual carb counts are. You're going to be amazed at the difference. You really are.

Cups were recommended in the book and by the Atkins Center because, like I said yesterday, they knew that most people had measuring cups and would do that - but most wouldn't invest in or use a scale. When I spoke with the Atkins Center 4 years ago they told me to weigh- it was by far a more accurate way to count carbs. I mean, really- if you take a 1 cup measuring cup and fill it full of spinach and I take a 1 cup measuring cup and fill it full of spinach, the actual amounts in that cup could vary drastically based on how small the spinach was shredded and how tightly packed. An ounce is an ounce is an ounce, ya know?

That said, I'd really suggest getting in the habit of measuring your food in grams if that's an option on your scale. All serving sizes are listed in grams (usually in ( ) after the oz/cups serving size) and it's a far more accurate way to measure.

There is a difference between mass and volume. Cups are a volume measurment - oz are a weight measurement.

That said - Yes. A cup = 8 fluid oz - but obviously that's not going to work with things like Lettuce. 3oz of lettuce enters into Fiday just as easily as 100 grams or 1/2 cup does. (The oz and grams are more accurate)

Weigh the veggies, plug it into Fitday, make adjustments in amounts where you need to and EAT!!!!! It's a beautiful thing, ain't it?!!

I know it's a little confusing at first, but just double check your measurments against Fitday and you'll get the hang of it in no time!
