Re: Troubleshooting: It is not working!

The more exercise you do, the easier it is to loose when you carbs are cut down. 30 minutes of light jogging would help you a lot or 30 minutes of doing stairs or aerobics via a dvd. I believe that when you exercise, you have more flexibility with your carbs, especially if you are working out hard 45-60 minutes, 4 times a week.

If you don't get a solid amount of exercise, you have to be more careful in order to loose the weight. You have to focus on keeping the carbs under 20 and avoid the artificial sweetners and products. Focus on natural meals high in fat while even limiting your cheese to the recommended amounts. After the first two weeks, gradually reintroduce some healthy carbs as suggested by the Atkin's book. The book really explains the various situation in fairly good detail and it's always a good idea to read, re-read and re-read!!

Most of the food I eat (or Atkins recommend) has about the same amount of fat and protein. So how do you get more fat in your diet.

( I also think that I have not been good at including the count of fat I add, olive oil and butter. I made sure that I did for breakfast and it came out more fat than protein - so I will make sure I add those things in fitday)

Exercise - I don't really as I said above. I know what you are saying. It is the best thing to do if you want to lose weight. But I am busy and it is not very likely to happen. I try to walk and keep on my feet as much as I can though.

You add fat to your cooking, cook veggies in butter, cook everything in butter! add mayo to salads, eat fatty meats,

Yes make sure you add them to fitday, it sure bumps everything up and would be more accurate for us to see!

Atkins without exercise doesnt work. Atkins without exercise isnt Atkins.

you can never be too busy to exercise! even 30 mins of your day would get your scales moving. THAT is your problem.

Re: Troubleshooting: It is not working!

I have read the book and although he recommends exercizing (as all doctors do) the theory behind losing weight by lowering carb is not dependent of running half an hour every day? Or did I get it wrong?
As I said, I move and I think I am within the minimal requirement of 30 minutes brisk walk four times a week. Sure I can improve. Let me know if I am wrong about my understanding of the principles.

Re: Troubleshooting: It is not working!

Liv, I think you're off to a good start with the exercise you've indicated. If you can do more, great. If not, at least you are up moving around doing something. I do not think you have to go out and start becoming a runner (although many do, including myself). As you get in better shape, your 30 minute walk might turn into a 1 minute run/5 minute walk interval which might turn into a 30 minute jog some day. Or it might not. Being active vs being completely sedentary is the key. And, as you lose weight and increase in endurance for whatever exercise you do, is to push yourself just a little more.

You've gotten a lot of advice here on this thread and I'm sure it's mind boggling right now. I'd start with ditching the aspartame and continue everything else you're doing. If that doesn't work, then you can move onto other things to find what is going on.

Re: Troubleshooting: It is not working!

Just an update. I revised my diet and cut out the stuff with sweetners. I weight myself today and had after 14 days lost 10 pounds. I think that is so cool. So it looks like your suggestions were right on. Since I had a shaky start (pun intended ) I decided that I would stay on induction a little longer. I am not having any issues with the diet and not finding it boring yet.

As fat has more calories than protein (9 per gram of fat and 4 per gram of protein) you need to be looking at the percentages of fat/protein rather than the grams of fat/protein when looking at fitday.

Yesterday I had 123 grams of fat and 119 grams of protein which as you have noticed is nearly the same number of grams - BUT the percentages worked out to 65% fat and 28% protein!

So look at the percentages and you might find you are closer to the 65%/30%/5% than you think.

BTW in case anyone is wondering where those ratios come from, as DANDR doesnt mention % at all, there was a study conducted by (I think) Duke's University where they analysed the menus in DANDR and found that the induction ones worked out to 65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs.

There is a good thread at the top of the 14-day induction forum about how to 'tweak' menus by adding/removing a 'little' fat to change your ratios appreciably - it doesnt take much to alter the ratios.

There should be a code. Just copy it.

Under the blue lines on top click "User CP"

Then to the left open "Edit Signature" and paste in the code.
