    Hey guys-
    soo.. i bought this book *the all new atkins advantage* and of course i've read it.
    Well.. i'm on day 11 of atkins induction... and DYING . I have been doing some things, not by the book- which i am going to confess in a few minutes- what i would like to know is WHY is it wrong!
    First off- i have been eating some things in induction that are low carb- but in the label have some added sugars such as deli meat and cheesy brats. .. why is it bad to eat low carb foods with added sugars?
    secondly. First week induction i lost 12 lbs. from day 7-11 i have not lost a pound.. in fact i gain 2 pounds then loose it again. I'm on my period- could that make a difference? I have keysticks.. and i range from small to moderate- is that good enough?
    I'm actually pretty hungry.. which is WIERD. Does that mean i'm not eating enough?
    I've kept a journal of what i've eaten every day.. here it is just in case anyone has any questions about what i've been eating or anything

    Day 11 - i bought ketone test strips. I'm moderate - so
    at least i'm in ketosis i suppose?i STILL weigh 166 lbs, but
    maybe that is because i just started my period?? maybe i was/am

    been losing, but just ounces lately. i've been REALLY thirsty.. for
    water only.

    Day 7- i still weigh 166 lbs. (i lost a few ounces) i went running
    /walk today with carter and I played at the park for a little bit.
    I feel fine- i have a hard time finishing my meals and eating
    regularly. I'm soo full all the time. I could def. live w/o 20
    carbs per day- even tho your not supposed to restrict to 20 carbs
    for more than 6 months.

    with carter and took a decent walk. I have not been very hungry
    that is why my meal is spaced apart. i did not plan it that way
    it just happened.

    02/06/07... 167lbs- so far to date i've lost 11 pounds. I feel
    really great. For the first time in a long time i'm sleeping
    all through the night instead of staying up all night or waking
    up every two hours. .. i'm excited - also
    i'm still taking my prenatal, flax seed oil, and calcium suppliments
    every morning. I'm also taking ammoxicillin I'm not exactly eating every 3 hrs. anymore b/c i'm too full.

    strawberrie's, wheat crackers, peper jack cheese, some baked
    lays chips and some classic lays potatoe chips. After eating
    the carbs i felt dizzy and light headed.- i plan on making up
    at least a few carbs by eating 12 carbs today.

    I'm sorry to break this to you but a huge amount of what you are eating is not on the induction list. Eat only what is on the list of foods from the 2002 Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution book.

    You need to cut out:

    *atkins chocolate chip bar
    *atkins peanut butter bar
    *atkins brownie
    *diet coke (can be a staller)
    *equal (use splenda)
    *advantage shake
    *packets of sugar (no sugar on Atkins!!!)
    *diet wild cherry pepsi (can be a staller)
    *tangelos (fruit...cannot eat until OWL 7)
    *slim jims (lots of fillers)
    *peanuts (not until OWL 3)

    I highly recommend eating none of the Atkins products. They are not real food. You are hungry because you are not eating the foods from the induction list and I suspect these foods are causing an insulin response. Plus the sugar alcohols in the Atkins products may be stalling you.

    Also, you wrote that:

    Obviously these items aren't on the list either. And you can't really make up carbs the next day. You need to be under 20 carbs a day, every day of the 14 week induction.

    Good luck and welcome to the Board! You've lost a good amount of weight so far so doing Atkins right will bring you even better results.

        hey looks like you got a really good response arleady but I just wanted to add

        YOUcandoIT =)

        It looks like you really care about this so just regroup and adjust, you are showing trace on Keto Stix so your going to really kick but once you adjust those foods

        Let us know how it goes !!!

        Oh one more thing I felt horrible till after Induction everyone is diffrent make sure you stay on top of multi-vitamins and water and know it will get better

            You don't really need to start again. Although you have not really been doing Atkins as Dr A designed it, but (sort of) Atkins as the Atkins company redesigned it in an effort to sell more of their products, losing 10-12lbs is a LOT. You weigh 166lbs now, which suggests that your loss is WELL more than the 5-10% that can be expected on induction.

            If possible try to get a hold of the 2002 version of the book.

            Lowering your carbs will just stall you, not help you lose weight. Most people find that when they move on to OWL and start eating more veg the lose more weight, not less and also feel even better and have more variety. Move on.

            Yes, having a period will slow things down, but there will ALWAYS be times of slow loss anyway. You cannot expect the rate of loss you experience in the first week to continue, it's mostly water anyway. The rate of loss is not related to the success of loss at all - real success is getting to goal and KEEPING it off, and speed is not a factor.

            On the ketostix - don't worry about the colour they turn, if they turn you are in ketosis. Trying to drive the shade darker is pointless. The easiest way to do it is not drink enough as if you are dehydrated they will be dark, but obviously you don't want to do that. In fact don't worry about the sticks at all, just eat the way you should and this will work.

            You are doing great, just tighten up on things a little and you will be good for the long run.

              I just wanted to add that deli meats are loaded with extra sugars as well. I would avoid those too. Best of luck to you as you get on the right track. You can do it. I have eaten the Atkins bars while on induction and have been doing well, however, not very often. They are so filled with chemicals that I just feel like I am doing better for my body to eat real food.


              It is nice seeing a picture where I actually have a neck!

                Hey, you are doing great, like everyone said, just make the adjustment and you will be doing Atkins the right way and melting the fat away.

                What I know:
                1-Atkins WOE/WOL plan works
                2-I need to always work on the behaviors and triggers that make me over eat.
                3-Atkins WOL is part of the puzzle, but is not the entire thing.
                4-Self-deprecation only feeds our inner ego and not in a good way.

                  guys. I'm going to go on proper induction once i stop breast feeding. i've been on the breast feeding boards and found out i have to worry about toxins in my breast milk. For now, i'm going to Eat more of a variety- low carb diet- and lose or maintain my weight. But once i'm done with that, all your advice and imput is going into my diet in full force! thanx so much

                    also! kate58... i really appreciate your post. Interesting that you say that lowering the carbs will NOT lessen my weight. I was stalled at 166lbs for 5 days. i up'd my carbs to 25-27 carbs per day and i lost another 3 pounds! thanks a bunch

                      Perhaps I missed this in your post, but are you following ATKINS or the ATKINS advantage? They are similar, but one is Atkins, and one is an impostor.

                      If you want to do Atkins, pick up a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) edition, so that you will be armed and ready when you stop breastfeeding.

                      Atkins Advantage was written by someone else, and from what I understand, they've basically taken Atkins, added in some no-no foods, and switched some rungs around.

                      I'm glad to hear that you've eliminated those shakes and bars from your daily foods. They are what we call "frankenfoods" here on the board--filled with chemicals and names of things nobody without a degree in science can pronounce!

                      Best of success on whatever plan you choose...
