  • First few days- are these foods okay???

    hello,
I'm on my third day, finally decided life has so much more to offer than just eating out, the first day i did kinda cheat and eat a few doritos but i didn't completely fall off, i only had about 10, and the serving size is 13 i think and that has like not that many carbs, sorry don't remember exactly how many it has but since then i've been trying hard. here's what i have eaten i'll try and remember everything. if you could let me know what of these food can and ca' be eaten it'd help me alot. i'm a VERY VERY pickey eater, i know you will all say 'eat veggies' but i don't like any except corn, lol. but here is my menu...

    beverages:
    dasani bottled water - about 3 or 4 12oz bottles a day
Dt. Sunkist (will this slow me down alot and also would dt. rite be better since it doesn't contain aspertame? and has splenda instead) i've been drinking about 1 16oz bottle a day but today i actually had like 2 1/2. alot less than i had before this week though)

    snack:
handfull of Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts (i was pleasantly surprised to see these only had 3 carbs in 39 pieces, i thought they'd be loaded with carbs)
that's really the only snack i eat but sometimes i go have 3 slices of pre-cooked bacon when i get sick of peanuts....(i hate chocolate so it hasn't been hard getting away from desserts or snacks like that)

    breakfast:
    3 slices of pre-cooked bacon
and today had 1 scrambled egg also (not to fond of eggs though but they seem to fill me up)

    lunch:
homemade cheeseburger or hamburger (velvetta cheese and 80% ground beef) no bun (small amount of ketchup but i can definatly go without the ketchup if it's gonna slow me down a bunch....plz let me know

    supper:
hamburger w/ no bun or chicken breasts (skinless & boneless)
also I've been having these packaged pre-cooked Oscar Mayer Chicken Breast Strips 'Grilled', i think they have 0 or 1 carbs per serving....these are my fav supper so plz let me know if they will slow me down....

also, we're thinking of having taco salad, is that okay to eat, just basic meat, lettuce and small amount of cheese...with a dt. soda probably or else water.....sorry for the long post, but i know if i don't lose within the first 2 weeks i'm gonna see this as pointless and wanna give up which i don't wanna do so i wanna make sure i'm doing it right...
i'm using fitday.com and according to there the foods i was eating last week totaled up to about 200 carbs a day or more, so i know i'm eating way less and the funny thing is i'm more energized and i feel great today and yesterday....i have had bad headaches everday though....asprin shound help those easily though.....
i'm hoping to lose like 17-20lbs by mid april, is that a realistic goal....i'm about 5'6" and am atleast 60 lbs overweight so I'm not sure how much i should expect to lose the first 2 wks - month...thanks in advance for all your help...glad to join this amazing website family.....
I'M GONNA STOP LOOKING BACK & START MOVING ON & LEARN HOW TO FACE MY FEARS, LOVE WITH ALL OF MY HEART, MAKE MY MARK, I WANNA LEAVE SOMETHING HERE...GO OUT ON A LEDGE WITHOUT ANY NET, THAT'S WHAT I'M GONNA BE ABOUT CAUSE I WANNA BE RUNNING WHEN THE SAND RUNS OUT...CAUSE PEOPLE DO IT EVERYDAY, PROMISE THEMSELVES THEY'RE GONNA CHANGE, I'VE BEEN THERE, BUT I'M CHANGING FROM THE INSIDE OUT, THAT WAS THEN AND THIS IS NOW

Re: First few days- are these foods okay???

    Hi, welcome on !

There are some fishy bit(e)s in your menu, though it shouldn't be too difficult to change/remove them.

First of all, no peanuts during induction. You are only allowed to add them in Rung 3 of OWL, so until you reach that point you should try some other snacks.*

I would not advise you to have diet soda. This way of life concentrates on substituting junk food with healthy, tasty meals, and not junk food with low carb junk food. I never drank diet soda since I started Atkins, but I know that it stalls some people. And even more important, it's JUNK.

Just as you said, you should have more vegetables. If you don't like raw veggies, try cooked ones (e.g. cauliflower, broccoli, spinach). Also, raw vegetables become very tasty if you add some cheese on them. For example you can slice some cucumber and spread cream cheese on it, just as you would do on a sandwich. They make a nice and healthy snack. Below I give you another idea of eating more veggies.

I'm not sure how much cheese you eat in total, but you're allowed maximum 4 oz per day.

We don't have Oscar Mayer Chicken Breast Strips 'Grilled' where I live, but maybe someone else can help you with this.

    * For some tasty meals, check Linda's website: http://genaw.com/lowcarb/ The recipes marked with '*' are allowed on induction.

    Cream cheese with vegetables

This recipe uses about a cup of veggies, and it's really fast and easy to prepare. I mainly use it for breakfast, and it keeps my hunger away for about 4 hours.

    Ingredients:

    2 oz cream cheese
    0.25 oz butter
2 tomato wedges (about half of a medium size tomato)
    0.5 cup cucumber
    5-7 green olives
    1 tablespoon chopped onion (optional)
    2-3 parsley springs
    salt and pepper to taste

    Preparation:

Chop the tomatoes and the cucumbers. Cut each olive in half. In the meantime, place the cream cheese and the butter in a cup, and melt them in the microwave (set it at medium-high for about 30 sec - 1 min). Don't leave the cream cheese too much in the microwave, because you'll make a mess. When the cream cheese and butter melted, mix them together with a teaspoon until you get a homogeneous mixture. Add the salt and the pepper. Add all the vegetables to the cream cheese (in the bowl in which you melted the cream cheese and the butter) and fold them in with a spoon. Ornate with parsley (you don't have to eat it if you don't like its taste).

The cheese taste really covers the flavor of the vegetables, so this recipe is great if you're not a veggie lover.

Try some mayo on your burger instead of the ketchup. READ READ READ all your food labels despite what the carbs are listed as. You'll be surprised at the sugar added to foods.

Do you have a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution? You'll find a list of all induction friendly foods. Here is the list:

Good luck in your Atkins journey!! Post often, ask questions, start a journal & join a challenge or two.

Re: First few days- are these foods okay???

I first want to say to you congratulations on taking the steps to take control of you life. I want to encourage you to not get discouraged as people start to read your menu and critique it. You seem to have a postive attitude but you are doing quite a few things wrong for induction so it may feel like everyone is attacking your food choices when really what we want to do is make sure you are doing it right so as not to waste your time.

So here it goes ............. the very first thing you need to do is to get yourself a copy of the Atkins book and READ it! So may of your questions are right in the book and you can carry it with you for reference everyday! There is an acceptable food list there for induction and you would never have to wonder if what your eating is ok. So please try and find yourself a good copy and read read read!

Now as for what your eating ...........

There's a lot of debate on diet soda some say it stalls them some don't the thing is you have to count your servings of so make sure you do.

Peanuts are not allowed on induction ........... so those are a no no.

Be wary of the salt content in Bacon especialy the precooked ones. If you really like bacon better to buy a low salt type and cook it yourself. I buy and cook two pounds at a time adn then have it ready to eat on hand when I need it.

I'm not sure about velvetta but if I remember correctly it has sugar in it check the ingrediants and also remember to only have 3oz of cheese a day. And yes ketchup is a no no you can have your burgers with Mayo or ranch dresssing or even mustard.

Taco salad is mt fav but you need to season the meat yourself and not buy the prepared seasoning they contain carbs and sugars you can't have.

As you mentioned you are not getting any veggies and thats a huge part of what you can eat ......... you have to be very careful because what you are doing sounds like a high protein low carb diet you have made up yourself and not really following Atkins plan at all. If you do follow the Atkins plan you can look to lose about 10% of what your total need to lose is on induction( 2 weeks) so if you have 60 to lose you should see a loss of 6 lbs on induction. After that weight loss varies depending on how much excercise you get and what foods you eat.

Reading the book really is KEY to having success on the Atkins Way of Life ........... please don't be discouraged but see this as a challenge to figure it all out and do it right! Much luck to you!!!!!!
