  • Vegetables. Do we have to have them???

I haven't had a problem getting the protein in but I have been struggling with the vegetables.

Is it necessary to have vegetables daily if you are taking supplements?

    Please Help.

    Thanks

You should have vegetables, yes. Just choose ones on the lists that are higher in glycemic index so you don't have to eat as much. What exactly is bothering you? Having to fix them? I eat most all mine raw. I eat a lot of cucumber, jicama and tomatoes. (mostly cucumber)

Fixing them isn't to bad since most of mine are canned. I did buy a bunch of the mini seedless cucumbers. But, I left them at work on Friday. They would have made a cool, refreshing snack this weekend.

It seemed like the meals I ate this weekend (like the crab) just didn't fit with a vegetable. I wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing up my induction by not indulging on them.

Re: Vegetables. Do we have to have them???

I actually had a question in my head this morning. I know you should have a fat with each meal but I wonder if you have to have a veggie with each meal or if you could just eat veggies as snacks. I like to just have meat for breakfast and I don't want to eat veggies with that. I think you need to eat your veggies but if a certain meal doesn't call for them, I don't see why you have to eat something. I could be wrong. I want some of the others weigh in. Like when I eat hot wings, I don't want veggies with it so for my snack, it will be something like jicama.

I do know you should spread them out in the day and not have them all bunched together.

I'm from Maryland, here steamed crab is eaten with vegetable side dishes like coleslaw, tomatoes, fried green peppers, etc. Crab cakes and crab casseroles get the same side dishes.

Atkins requires that we eat 3 cups of veggies daily during Induction (and the rest of the diet.) There are 54 veggies on the Induction acceptable foods list. At least 1/2 of our daily carbs should be from vegetables.

As for supplements, that's what they are supplements. They aren't replacements.

Though there are many different possibilites when living Atkins my perception is that those who are really successful losing and maintaining eat lots of veggies. So I have been working on keeping my veggie count up as well. I try to incorporate veggies in most meals and snacks. There really are a lot of different veggies out there and so many ways to prepare them.

Don't discount the fiber issue, either. You need the fiber the veggies provide to keep things in order.

Supplements are alright, but there's some evidence that the best delivery system for vitamins is natural foods, and not supplements. I take them, but only as an adjunct to my veggies. Try to choose the veggies that give you the most nutrional "bang for your buck." Broccoli's a big winner.

Yes...you need the veggies. When I first started I hated veggies. I forced myself to eat them. I am glad I did because six months later they have become a staple in my diet and I know they have made me healthier (and slimmer of course).
