  • Need Help - Please Review

Hi all. I have been lurking around here for quite a while, but this is my first post. I started low carbing on October 1, 2008. In that time, I have only lost 8-9 pounds. I have wanted to give up soooooo many times, but I keep plugging away. I was hoping that you all could give me some insight as to what I am doing wrong. I originally started out doing South Beach. After about a month of that not working, I switched to more of an atkins approach.

So here is a typical days menu:
B - homemade protein shake (1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup heavy cream, spoonful cottage cheese, 1 scoop whey protein powder, ice, sprinkle of sf jello mix)

S - hard boiled egg and a light string cheese

L - Large salad (lettuce, celery, broc, cauliflower, green peppers), for dressing I use 1 can of tuna mixed with mayo (probably about 3 tablespoons). Plus 2 slices of Oscar Meyer Roast beef lunch meat smeared with a creamy horseradish sauce.

S - small handful of nuts (peanuts or almonds)

D - Meat (steak, burger, fish, chicken) with a veggie. Usually mashed cauliflower (yummy), or broc/caulif, brussel sprouts, or green beans.

I drink the required amount of water, sometimes a little more and in the evening I have 2-3 diet sodas.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am afraid that if things don't start happening, I am going to give it up.

    Thank you in advance.

I'm confused as to what stage of Atkins you're doing... I also guess I need to ask if you moved up the rungs (per Atkins) instead of doing South Beach... If you didn't move up the rungs, there are a number of things that could be causing your body to not drop weight, and you wouldn't know about it.

Also, you didn't give any info about your actual stats which is pretty important, or the actual amounts you eat, besides for breakfast. If you are a 5'5" 110lb person, eating this on a regular basis is not going to help you lose weight.

Have you tried logging food into something like Dailyplate.com or Fitday.com to see what your percentages/actual number of carbs are per day?

Thank you for your quick response. I would say that I am doing a modified extended induction. I am 5' 1" and started at 194. So I have quite a bit to lose. I don't do much exercise. I have used fitday at little. I don't measure out anything, so I really have a hard time putting stuff in fitday.

personally speaking, i think that logging in food will help you. at the begining i never logged in nor measured my food either, and had the exact same problem as you. i lost 8 pounds on my first week of induction, and never lost an oz after that, keeping in my i started first week of september lol. i never really quit, coz i loved the way i felt while on the program, and i started to eat lots of protiens, lots of fats, and a good amount of legal veggies. my weight started to slowly creep up, thats when i decided that i should be cutting back on food consumption in general, and started to log in and measure what i eat. now i eat about 1000-1200 cals a day, meanwhile keeping my fat, protein and carb ratio at the right level. plus i eat every 2 hours, i find that very helpful since im always full and never feel like pigging out at any point during the day. so i finally started to see difference in my weight and body measurments
        hope that helps.

If you're doing extended induction, you should not be eating the following:

            Cottage cheese
            Whey protein powder
            Nuts

Technically, you should not be drinking diet soda or eating sugar free jello. Both could stall you.

I believe that 1/3c heavy cream is more than is allowed for induction.

I don't understand why your string cheese is light.

The total amounts of veggies should be 2-3 cups off of the first list in the book, and 1c off the second list (if the total from the first list is not more than 2c).

I really think you need to log your foods, and check your net carbs, because I believe you will see that you are way over an extended induction amount. Your percentages for induction should also be 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carb, so make sure that these match.
