  • First Day - How Does It Look?

    First post, too!

    Breakfast:
    1 T butter
    2 T cream (2 c decaf coffee, 1 T cream each)
    2 Splenda
    2 eggs
    2 slices bacon
    1 oz cheddar

    Lunch:
    1 Perfect Portions chicken breast
    2 T grated fresh parmesan
    2 c lettuce
    2 T Ken's caesar dressing (0 carbs)

    Snack:
    1 c celery
    1 oz cream cheese

    Dinner:
    4 oz sirloin

SparkPeople.com says it equals 1120 calories, 12 carbs (though I don't think it counted the Splenda, so 14 carbs), and somewhere in the 80s for both fat and protein (I just closed the window on accident). It's so weird (and awesome) to be able to eat bacon and cheese and full-fat dressing and not feel guilty!

    Any thoughts are appreciated Thanks!

Looks decent. You should be getting more carbs from Veggies. So perhaps think to change your menu on some days to include 2 cups of higher carb veggies for lunch rather than the lettuce.

I think your calorie counts are a little low. Maybe add some more fat. I didn't calculate your percentages, but they should be around 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs.

You're supposed to consume 20g net carbs or less, and 12-15 of these should be from veggies off of the allowable veggies lists.

Re: First Day - How Does It Look?

Thanks! Hm, I can always throw together different veggies for a salad... I was concentrating on the "salad greens" part and trying to stay within the three cups! I put in an extra T of salad dressing today but haven't entered it into SparkPeople yet. Maybe that'll help.

Edit: Okay, my new stats for the day are - 1214 calories, 13 carbs (8 from veg, 5 from other), 91 fat, 88 protein. Apologies if this is a really dumb question that's already been explained on the boards, but how do I calculate percentages? Gah, I need to get off the internet at work and finish the book instead!

      Thanks!

Actually, here's another question; is it ok to go, say, 1/2 cup over the three cup limit of veggies to bump it up to 12 or so? (I'm still working my way through the book!)

Re: First Day - How Does It Look?

You should be able to reach a decent amount of veggie carbs with the 3 cups... When I have salads, I eat spinach or spring mix instead of lettuce... it may not add that much, but it's a little better. It's okay to have it low for a day, just try to incorporate higher carb veggies tomorrow.

I think sparkpeople gives percentages. myplate and fitday both do, so it seems only reasonable they would as well. I find that when my percentages are correct, the grams of carbs i'm eating are about the same as the grams of protein... then again, it's possible i just eat strange things that let this happen.

Re: First Day - How Does It Look?

Thanks Lyssie! I'll play around on SP more, maybe I'm not seeing it. If they don't have it, I'll switch to Fitday!

EDIT: Okay, switched to Fitday and added another T of butter as well. Now I'm up to 69% fat, 4% carbs and 27% protein. I realized all the protein is coming from the chicken and steak, both of which are lean! It's so nice to be able to have chicken skin and fattier meat... I'm heading out to the store today

Re: First Day - How Does It Look?

ok, that does it..... I am going to start all over again because I am doing this diet all wrong. I'm not doing all the counting carb, pro, fat, sug etc. I thought it was only carb. It's all getting more confusing to me. I'm waiting on the book to arrive so I'll start there. Thanks for helping me make my decision. I enjoy reading your menu's because they are just like mine. It seemsI don't eat enough veg either. Bacon, eggs, sausages cream cheese and celery seem to be my natural diet at the minute but I'm sure that will change. Thanks again. I am going to reregister on the site as well an start all over again...

Re: First Day - How Does It Look?

Yeah, I eat a lot of chicken and don't like the skin so have to counter it with butter and other fatty things.

I forgot to say - welcome to the board.

Natalie... you should be mainly focusing on counting your net carbs... these are the total carbs minus the fiber... Actually, I think in France perhaps this is already subtracted on the nutrition information. The rest of the stuff is good to keep track of to make sure you're on course, but it's not the world if you're percentages are off.

The first time I did Atkins, I had no idea of percentages... I would eat for breakfast, 3 egg whites and 2 sausage patties (along with about 8c of coffee), then lunch would be a chef salad with some sort of diet soda, and dinner would be a meat (chicken or pork or whatever) with a side of veggies. For dessert, we would have berries with heavy cream, or sugar free jello with homemade whipped cream. OBVIOUSLY this is not what is recommended in the book, but the main thing was that I kept my carb counts where they were supposed to be.

Thanks! Everyone's so friendly, the recipes sound AMAZING (I made oopsie rolls last night and am making whooshie pie tonight so I can have some for breakfast... oh man)... I'm so excited because I can actually eat what I love!

It's much better than starving all the time, for sure.

Seriously! I just had my snack and am pleasantly stuffed; I'm already not as sleepy as I usually am! My problem with dieting has always been too many carbs and not nearly enough fat and protein... it's so funny seeing it on Fitday as the opposite!

It's about to be TOM so I feel gigantic, but I figure it only gets better!

I ended up eating more in the form of butter, steak and a oopsie bread (I say bread because after trying to whip egg whites with a whisk last night, I gave up, and now it's like a giant, delicious pancake). It's weird not counting calories or fat, since I've been doing it for so long! I don't know if this is ok or not, but I'm still in the right percentage margins, I think, though tomorrow I plan to boost my carbs with different veggies since they're so low today.
