  • OWl rung 1 - hope this is good

    I am having next to no weight loss (though medical issues and LOTS of exercise, and not having a lot to lose definitely contribute). That said, I want to make sure I'm not inadvertantly eating the wrong things/amounts just to make sure. Thanks for checking:

    meal 1: 3 deviled eggs, cucumber slices
    meal 2: meatballs - only 3...didn't end up liking them much (from Shelia's site), small red, yellow, orange peppers with 1/2 avocado
    meal 3: 4.5 oz chicken breast over baby spinach and 7 grape tomatoes with homemade italian dressing
    meal 4: Korean beef recipe from Linda's site wrapped in romaine lettuce leaf
    meal 5: small portion chicken breast with mayo (if hungry)

    I'm trying to do no dairy and man is that hard! I miss my string cheese snacks and it really cuts out a lot of casserole ideas. Oh well.

    Maybe more salads. What's in the italian dressing? Is there hidden sugar in the Mayo? You can still have 3 to 4 oz daily of mozzarella, cheddar and Swiss cheeses on induction. Drinking enough water? If you don't have a lot to lose then your weight loss will be smaller. When I first went on this diet I had 50 lbs to lose, and lost 12 lbs on induction. On reinduction, I have only 15 lbs to lose and lost 4 lbs so it's all relative...

      Nope, no sugar in the mayo. There is <1 in the italian dressing. I make it with the Good Seasoning packet, extra virgin olive oil, and apple cider vinegar.

      I'm not doing dairy per doc's request. It makes Atkins sooooo much harder. I had no idea!

        Eh...cheesy shmeezy. Look at it that way! I think it is the main culprit of constipation.

        If you are really missing the flavor, what about just using it as a garnish? Doc ok with that?

          I'm going to ask her on Thursday when I see her. I'm really hating this without dairy. I might go to rung 3 soon since I was in induction for 4 weeks and won't be doing the dairy rung. Having nuts might help. Thanks.

            I can understand that. I have never in my life cooked with cream or so much 1/2 and 1/2 .... I love it. Are you lactose intolerant?

            Like I was saying the cheese was not good for me, clogged me up and made weird harsh grumbles and pains in my intestines...so I cut out eating chunks of it for snacks but I still use it in cooking and am ok so far.

            Regardless of what the doc says, you will find a way to do this...you CAN do it.

              I really really hate this. I just ate eggs for dinner. I am so sick of eggs. I was going to have steak but it didn't defrost in time. I recently got all the ingredients for a few of Linda's recipes (chicken enchilada, chile relleno casserole, pizza) and they are all with dairy. I'll give it 2 more days and then I want some back in. I'm not creative enough in the kitchen to make eating this way fun. I like Atkins a lot...just not without the dairy. No fruit, no nuts, no dairy, no grains...it's a little limiting!!! I know I will get more as I move up the rungs, but it's hard right now.

              I don't know if I'm lactose intolerant. Sometimes I have symptoms that say I am and other times I'm ok. I had an allergy test done last week and the results should be back next week so I might know more then. Thanks.

                Darn, sorry its no good for you right now...

                BTW, I read somewhere in the book, that if its too discouraging, frustrating or limited feeling for you, then move on up the rungs.

                Apparently some people can lose it and go carb crazy when they feel like that. But you sound like a really strong person. Hang in there!

                  Thanks for your sympathy.

                  I may have to move up the rungs. There's just not a lot to eat. Of course right now I'm dealing with some medical stuff too so it's just a lot to figure out and adjust at once. I think I might be overmedicated on my thyroid meds and it's making me REALLY hungry. Of course I'm exercising a lot so that could do it too. Who knows. I'll figure it out. Thanks so much.

                    Don't forget to hit Rung 1 Veggies before you move past the dairy rung onto 3 nuts & seeds. The 5 more net grams of veggies just might be the ticket to getting the pounds moving off. It's important to move up the rungs in the order that they are listed. It's okay to skip a rung if you don't intend eating off of them. Just go to the next rung in line.
                    Bummer about not having dairy. I know what you mean about the delicious recipes that call for it.
                    I'm hoping that you're test results don't include dairy as an allergy for you. You may be tollerable to some and intollerable to others.
                    I have to watch dairy as well. Cottage cheese stalls me. So I can eat that in moderation only.

                      I'm on rung 1 now.

                      I hope the test shows I'm okay too. It looks at specifics so maybe I can eat some but not all. It has butter, goat milk, cow milk, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. Weird. I didn't think the body would treat them differently, but apparantly it does. We'll see.

                        when I was younger I could only eat egg whites sparingly and no milk. As I grew older I was able to have the yolk of an egg occassionally and a small amount of milk -- older still I can now eat eggs with no problem but have given up milk for Atkins (and don't really miss it), I also have allergies to certain oranges but not all. Your body determines what it will tollerate and what it won't.

                        Are you allergic to any vegetables? There are some wonderful soup recipes on Linda's site that I've tried that have no dairy in them. meat and a salad or veggies and fish for dinner. I rarely have dairy in my daily meals and if I do it's as a topping for salad or eggs. You need to think of more than eggs to eat, there are so many different foods to choose from.

                          I'll check out those soup recipes. Thanks. I think I'm just bummed because I literally just printed out a whole bunch of Linda's recipes that sounded so tasty and now I can't have them. There are only so many ways to cook eggs, beef, and poultry without any dairy. Plus we can't have sauces because they contain sugars typically. I'll be ok. Just need to be creative I guess. Thanks.

                            I'm not sure if you are familiar with cabbage rolls - but I made a "lazy" version substituting cauliflower for the rice that was pretty good - no cheese in that. PM me if you are interested & I'll send the 'recipe' when I get home from work.

                            I'll go thru the recipes that I've collected & see if anything cheese-free looks good
