  • skin shrinking back......??

if you lose roughly40-50 pounds, will you're skin shrink back to normal or will it just hang there? I'm curious because when I see " the biggest loser, I have wondered if they have any surgery done or if indeed it shrinks back. I need to lose weight and I have been told several different answers.. Any feedback would help.
    Thanks

I've been told that it depends on a combination of things. Age, how many times you've strectched the skin by gaining and losing, genetics... I always wonder why some peoople lose so much and look so toned while others don't. I would imagine exercise probably helps too. Good Luck!

I asked the same question on another thread in the health section titled "loose skin". I got some pretty cool responses ..go check it out.

Also, started the dry brushing thing just today. ...why the heck not, right?

Depends. Some have loose skin, some don't. Exercise and dry brushing are the best way to minimise this.

                      Re: skin shrinking back......??

I just restarted Atkins last week. I have lost over 100 pounds so far and have had two children. I definately have loose skin on my stomach. When I reach my goal weight I am going to look into getting a tummy tuck. I mean, it's great to be healthier and thinner, but part of the reason I wanted to lose weight is too look great, no matter what clothes I am wearing.

This is likely due more so to the nutrition involved during weight loss than anything else. Studies show those with this problem are actually younger, not older folks.

Your skin naturally expands and contracts. Its elasticity is governed entirely by your nutrition. Some of the biggest keys to skin elasticity are vitamin C (fruits/veges), lutein (leafy veges), and omega fatty acids (fish oil). So if you are not getting proper nutrition AS you're losing the weight, you're sabotaging your body's ability to contract the skin as the rest of you disappears.

While low-carb diets do bring in fruits and veges in later phases, not everyone embraces them. That may cause you to drop weight faster, but you're not going to get the nutrients that your skin needs for its part in the process either.

Here's basically what I'm doing to average a 2-4lb loss each week:
                        • Free Weights M, W, F 40 minutes
                        • Cardio T, Th, S 90 minutes
                        • Average Intake=1300-1400 Average Expenditure=3200
                        • Low sodium (attempting - it's really tricky!)
                        • Grazing Approach
                        • Use of vitamins and whey protein isolate

                          Re: skin shrinking back......??

P.S. The reason the problem generally belongs to younger folks is due to the fact that they're more able to lose weight at a fast pace. That's generally what exacerbates the issue, but ultimately good nutrition for your skin during a paced weight loss should avoid the situation for most. If it's been decades of obesity for someone, loose skin may only be able to be managed :-/

well. all i can tell you is my experience. I'm 5'4" and 22 years old. Got preggers at 174lbs. when i left the hospital after delivery, i weighed 220lbs. 10 1/2 months later i weigh 160 lbs. I JUST started exercising 3 days ago... i've lost over 70lbs and my skin has for the most part shrunken back. I had a c-section so i'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but i have a lil skin over hang. When i'm done losing all my weight, 30lbs, i can tell you more accurately if its a fat overhang or skin! But for the most part.. i will say it's not something i'm worrying about... i feel the muscles tightening after lots of ab work and cardio and weight lifting good luck!!!

I think there is some validity to this, but not for everyone. I have fully embraced fruits and veggies (and everything else on OWL), and regularly take my supplements (including flax and fish oils), but I still have a good bit of loose skin. I do believe it will rebound EVENTUALLY, but I also think that genetics has a lot to do with it, and some of which is beyond our control.

That said, you may want to take a look at the link to the article in my signature "On loose skin." I believe that with diligence and patience (and good nutrition, to your point, mystic) MOST people can tighten up. The question might be... how hard are you willing to work(out) to continue to decrease your body fat percentage after reaching your goal?
