  • Trying to get it right for the love of a dog

It's my birthday this week. I did not make my goal weight, BUT I WILL!
My goal will be March 12, in honor of my Little Pixel Boy. We lost him to diabeties March 12, 2009. He saved my life.
My little dog was diabetic and I lost him because of insulin complications.
He was my wake up call, because my blood sugars were out of control and I had also become insulin intolerant.
So here is my journey and almost to goal, 20# to go.
Thanks to a little black Schnauzer named PIXEL and what I learned during his struggle with diabeties.
My life has been so inspired by this little rescue pup, we loved him so much and he was with us only for a short time.

This little guy saved my life.
    We miss him terribly

Re: Trying to get it right for the love of a dog

wow.... your post really resonated with me.
Firstly its my birthday this week too... so happy birthday to us

But more importantly, my dog is part of my weight loss journey too. A few years ago some stuff happened in my life and I just ate and ate and turned into a couch potato and put on 60lb. I stopped walking my dog and he just lay on the couch watching TV with me. He got so overweight that he developed pancreatitis and it turned him into a diabetic and he became blind as a complication of this.

It was a huge wake up call to me that I could not only injure myself like that but my dog too.
These days I walk him an hour a day and I run another hour on top of that. He has had an amazing operation with artificial lenses implanted and he can see.

His illness probably saved my life!!
            Thank God for our dogs!
            All the best..

Re: Trying to get it right for the love of a dog

Happy birthday to you to my friend. We are walking down the same path aren't we, I have tears reading your message.
What is your dogs name, Austrailan shepard - beautiful I must say?
My little Pixel had lens implants also, for about 1 year before we lost him. He was so cute watching the ants on the ground....things fasinated him after he got his lenses. He developed Cushings diease, which caused his diabeties to take his organs down.
Tuesday my birthday, we learned our healthy little male Teddy is diabetic. He has never had a weight problem and always the fit and active one of the 3.
I am also committed to walking my dogs now. I can't bare hurting my babies because of my ignorance. They are so special and depend on me to provide the best possible care for them, I know they would do the same for me.
We are lucky to have our dogs, thank you for sharing with me.
              Christine

Re: Trying to get it right for the love of a dog

..I get tears in my eyes too when I realise how much my weight gain impacted on him as well. You know, he is such a loving dog that he sits there and loves to be held when we take pin prick blood tests from his lip for blood sugar testing, he never flinches or gets scared with us, he trusts us that much.

His name is Rory, I have two others.... Hollie and Belle. A mad bunch! Love it
Hey all the best with Teddy, I think mostly diabetic dogs do pretty well apart from the eye problem. I laughed at your comment about Pixel and the ants, Rory was the same when he got his new eyes. We would throw matchsticks and he would pick them up and fetch - a lot better than bumping into the furniture.
