Betty, I get what you're saying. My husband and I don't and have never taken meds. I'd like to buy higher quality food, ie organic/free range, etc, but can't afford it. For instance, farm raised fish is notorius for having high levels of mercury, but I can get farm raised salmon for $5 bucks a pound, and it's $16 bucks a pound for wild caught. I guess I'm getting onto a whole new subject here. I'll stop now.

Hey guys, after reading all the posts, I have to say that I am glad I live where I live..South Texas. I buy about $200/or less worth or groceries a month. My house cost me $17,500 for a two bedroom/1 bath. Its not a palace, but my husband and I could not pass up the good deal we got on it. It has a total of 2300 square feet, which 1150 of it is house and the other 1150 is garage which is fixing to be converted into a main living room, master bedroom/bath, utility room, etc. We are doing the work ourselves paycheck to paycheck so we are not going to have to pay out the butt for contractors. My husband will be finished with our carport next week then we will start framing in the garage. Once the house is finished, no loan payment, which I do not have a mortgage either, it is seller financed.

On top of everything else, I live right next to my mom which is connected by a sidewalk...it is really nice living right next to her and my dad. My kids get to see them all the time..but they are definately spoiled by this.
The town I live in had about 800 people...no traffic..lol! Well, as you can see, I have written a book..sorry.

Good luck on the grocery thing..hope budgeting will not be too bad!

last week i started out before shopping with only 4 things in my fridge, that were not atkins related at all. So i basically started from scratch.

I spent about 140 bucks and still haven't used it all. (What i did was looked through a couple recipe books like casseroles and such, and made a list from that and went shopping only from that.

This week i have tons of food left over, the only thing i had to get was some more italian sausage, heavy cream, lettuce i get the good stuff but you can easily get the heads for $.99 but its good to add the nutruitional stuff) and some cauliflower, oh and bacon bits and some pepperoni sticks. So all that cost be about 40 bucks and i have more than enough for the next week.

Since i use to eat out every day, 8 bucks for lunch and dinner usually was about 10 to 15 bucks sometimes 20 if i did pizza which was probably 3 days a week, weekends i would say i spent about 50 plus on food. Sooo all in all my food expenses were a lot more -- 40 ish bucks for lunch 5 days a week, 50 bucks on a weekend, and dinner anywhere from 50-80 bucks -- geesh that is $140 minimum. a week. This week i spent forty after the initial 140 last week to get me started.

There is a great post regarding atkins on a budget i think Here is the thread

          Good luck. angel

Hi, guys. We are heading to the grocery store right now!!! too funny!! We used to spend $150 2x a month, my hubby got a raise recently and now we spend $200 2x a month for the 4 of us (hubby me 3 & 4yo) ( this amount also included diapers/ razors/ shave cream, shampoo etc.) We use comp adds and for most items stay away from "name brand" stuff. It really makes a difference. Mrs. Bairds/ Sunbeam bread for sandwiches for my men is like 1.60/ Great Value bread is 0.88. I mean come on it's the same ingredients!!! I find for me a London Broil is very cheap/yummy also thinnly sliced makes wonderful beef jerky. When my hubby and I were engaged and living together we could spend $400 for two weeks for the two of us. What a waste!!!!

              Sharon,
I'm not too far behind you. I was gawking at how much people don't spend. Don't I wish. I spend around 150 to almost 200 a week depending on what I need. Of course if I used a list and went to Super Walmart instead on Safeway I would save some money. Not to mention I'm loving the house for 17 thousand. What a stress reliever. I'm in N. Virginia and you can't get a good decent house in a decent neighborhood for under 400K.

              Sick isn't it.

Try living in So. Cal. A three bedroom, 2 bath house in a decent neighborhood will run you upwards of $450,000. On eof the guys I worked with ended up buying a $950,000 house just because of the area it was in.. it's 3bedroom 2 bath.

Ya'll want to talk expensive? Try paying $2.49 for a dozen eggs and upwards of $2.50 for a gallon of gas.

My weekly bill for just me runs about $50, add the kids in and it's about $100.

Put me in the $75 to $100 per week category (I'm buying for one person only).

But, I don't think twice about buying expensive Atkins-friendly foods (fresh raspberries and blueberries, crab legs, rib eye steak, etc.) because overall I'm spending at least $30 to $40 per week less than I used to. No more McD's breakfast sandwiches or Chinese or fast-food lunches or take-out dinners.
