  • New Again and Sorbitol Question

    Hi all,

I'm back on Atkins after having been off for about a year and a half. I lost 35 lbs the first time, and did so quite easily. But I had a few cheats which led to more, and more.... and then back to my old ways of eating. I've gained back what I lost. It's amazing how it creeps back on isn't it? When I went back to my old junk-food filled way of eating it's almost as if I turned off the part of my brain that was saying "Wait! This will make you fatter!!"

I'm losing slower this time, although I didn't weigh myself until day 6 so likely have lost more than I think. A major difference is that I didn't include exercise the first time around. Not this time though! I'm increasing my exercise and not letting myself get away with thinking "oh you don't have to exercise - look at how well you did the first time without it." Not so well since I gained all the weight back!

My question: is Sorbitol subtracted from the carb count or do I have to include it in the net carbs? I'm asking because I have some mints that contain Sorbitol so am not sure if they are ok or not.

    Thanks all!

Sorbitol is basically sugar alcohol and yes you subtract it to get your net carbs.

Now remember about Sugar alcohol, Ingesting Sorbitol can lead to some abdominal pain and mild to severe diarrhea. it causes upset GI's in many people so try to limit it. It is also considered a sweetner so you would have to limit it since you only get 3 sweetner allowance a day.

In my opinion, its nasty stuff and I would avoid it for health reasons. Your body already creates and getting to much has been known to damage cells leading to diabetes and what not. Of course thats large amounts.

Oh and BTW, Welcome! I am sure with the help here you will be able to reach your goal in no time!
