  • Tell me what you think about this

I was reading about L-Carnitine and came across this selection. Not2Late or 2Big maybe able to voice their opinion about it. I am curious if the claims are true, if so think it would be a good idea to supplement with it?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    "L-Carnitine and Fat Loss
L-Carnitine acts as a kind of escort service for fat, moving it into the little power centers of the cells (called mitochondria) so that the fat can be burned for energy. Quite simply, without optimal amounts of L-Carnitine, there is not optimal fat burning taking place.

The main source of L-Carnitine is red meat. Vegetarians and those who eat very small amounts of red meat, are most probably not getting enough.

L-Carnitine is "the most important nutrient for naturally supporting the weight loss process," according to Robert Crayhon, author of The Carnitine Miracle. According to Crayhon, whose book is meticulously documented with more than 60 published references, L-Carnitine is useful for weight management, fatigue, athletic performance, general energy and well-being."

I have also read about LCarnitine in the Dr Sears The Doctors Heart Cure and he states just about the same thing, "Carnitine shuttles fat into the energy centers of the cells where the fat can be burned to produce enegry." He aslo states that it prevents the accumumlation of excess fat in the heart, liver and muscles. He suggest taking 500 mn as a supplement every day. I think down in the supplement section of this forum there is a lot written about it. Check it out.

Dr. A suggests this supplement. I have also heard promising things about CLA. I took CLA for 2 months and it helped a lot. I would still be taking it, but just haven't had the chance to replace it.

          Hi,

I'm wondering, how safe is this LCarnitine? I'm asking because there are some drugs that don't show adverse effects until as long as the next generation. I know that some weight-loss pills causes heart problems, there was the 70s drug that helped with morning sickness but caused children to be born with flipper-like limbs, and most recently heard some news about viagra causing blindness. My point is, should we wait a bit longer before trying it out? Wait for more testing to be done?

Lol, I wonder if the trade off was worth it?

                  BTW, I found alot of info on L-Carnitine in the supplement section of this board. Its not some Diet formula, Actually you get it from the meats that you eat and your body makes it. Heres is the simplest explanation I got from 2Big;

"If you are deficient in it then supplements will help if not you are wasting your money."

                  lol

                      Hey G-mom
Just curious. Is "CLA" the same as L-carnitine?
                      What is CLA?

                        No,

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) comes in two isomers, the 9,11 isomer which appears responsible for improving muscle growth and the 10,12 isomer which primarily prevents lipogenesis (storage of fat in adipose tissue). Most supplements sold in stores contain a 50/50 mix of both isomers.

Many studies on CLA in humans include the tendency for reduced body fat, particularly abdominal fat, changes in serum total lipids and decreased whole body glucose uptake. One of the best known sources of it are....

If one is taking thyroid meds, L-Carnitine is something one cannot take, I believe.

I am not so sure, it seems that studies point the other way but there may be a small concern.

Studies show that L-Carnitine may have mediating effects on the thyroid system and metabolism, and be useful in conjunction with thyroid supplementation. Studies also show benefit in areas relating to autoimmune problems and thyroid function. Treatment of benign goiter generally consists of taking thyroid hormone pills. This causes the thyroid gland to become less active, and the goiter shrinks. However, there may be undesirable effects as well. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) can develop, including heart palpitations, nervousness, weight loss, and bone breakdown.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found evidence that use of L-carnitine could alleviate many of these symptoms. This 6-month study evaluated the effects of L-carnitine in 50 women who were taking thyroid hormone for benign goiter.57 The results showed that a dose of 2 or 4 g of carnitine daily protected participants' bones and reduced other symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

Carnitine is thought to affect thyroid hormone by blocking its action in cells. This suggests a potential concern: Carnitine might be harmful for people who have low or borderline thyroid levels to begin with. This possibility has not been well explored as yet.

                            So its on different grounds.
