I hear ya loud and clear my friend!!

I will see my doctor in about a month and see if I can get off insulin all together as my sugars are as follows since I have been on the program:

    129, 121, 130, 103, 115, 99, 113, 110, 111, 120, 128, 115, 124, 128, 108, 113, 116, 110, 104, 115, 94, 112, 101, 108, 102, 121, 105 and 103.

I say those are pretty stable and would love to get of 35 units of insulin twice a day! Johnny :guns

Those are great readings my friend. Most people I know that were diabetics when they started are pretty much off of insulin! including family members.

Actually there have been long term studies on ketogenic diets similar to Atkins.

Before insulin was readily available, diabetes was managed dietarily--using a ketogenic diet that mirrors Atkins. Elliot P. Joslin, MD's book, The Diabetic Manual, described this diet as a 100 gram (or less) carbohydrate diet that eliminated added sugars, limited grains and fruits, but was heavy on vegetables, water and animal proteins and fats.

The concern with Atkins nowadays is the "high fat". Well, some of that is questionable too. The "bad" fat is the trans fats (ie hydrogenated oils, vegetable shortening, some margarines). These fats are found in many commercial baked products like bread, cookies, cakes, even the Slim Fast bars (lol).

If you want to read up about fat, I suggest you get a hold of "Know your fats" by Mary P. Enig, PhD. She's an expert on fat and how it affects the body. It's a great book. And it clears up alot of the fat lies about.

            Forgot to add...

Occasionally, you can find copies of Dr. Joslin's book at used book sellers like abebooks.com. His first book came out in 1919 and he updated it every couple of years until his death in the early 1960s. The older books were the ones with the ketogenic diet 'how to', since they were the ones published before insulin became widely available. If you can get a hold of that book, compare that diet with Atkins and you'll begin to wonder if Dr. Atkins studied Joslin's work in medical school.

              Great info Not2late,

I'd also like to add, that opponents that scream high fat, well most people were eating alot higher amounts of fat, mostly bad, on the typical american diet.

They were eating High (bad) Fat and high Carb!

The governments have a vested interested in discouraging low-carb diets from going mainstream. They can't afford to feed the entire population practically on such a diet. It is in their best interest to keep most people fed and happy on cheap carbohydrates.

To the diabetic whose blood sugars are looking so good. Don't be fearful. That is a GOOD outcome of the diet. Besides, you have no need to stick to induction for more than 2 weeks. The rest of the diet is very balanced and good for diabetics IMO. Do get checked by your doctor to make sure everything else is okay though and for your peace of mind. It is hard to go against mainstream thinking, especially if you have diabetes or some other medical condition. You have shown courage.

Megs, yes, there have been studies about these diets. I'm not sure how longterm, but here is a neat site for some great research and studies that have been done: www.lowcarbsuccess.net

Only 'anecdotal' evidence based on my husband's experience but he was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 20 years ago but now after about 1 year on Atkins then having been on maintenance for a year he (with the agreement of his doctor) at the age of 73 now takes no diabetes medication at all.
Incidentally he also has 'normal' blood pressure and cholesteral too :yes

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

They were eating High (bad) Fat and high Carb!
I can't argue with that as I am a prime example of that statement!!

I eat alot of red meat and fish and veggies along with everything else! lol

I could easily eat an extra large pizza all by myself and 4 large plates of spaghetti and a whole garlic bread roll...

I was headed to a sure path of self-destruction and I see this program as my salvation to live long enough to travel and see what is beyond the fat wall I have put up!!! Johnny :guns

It always slays me when I read that no one knows the long-term effects of Atkins (or low carbing). And yet the world's obesity problem continues to escalate. Obviously, we know the long-term effects of being overweight and yet there are concerns about a lifestyle that eliminates nutritionless garbage and sugar??

I can tell you the long-term effects of following a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle:

                      Renewed energy
                      Youthfulness
                      Weight control
                      Craving elimination
Eating to live instead of living to eat
                      Wearing smaller clothes
                      Having the energy to exercise
                      Lowered cholesterol
                      Lowered blood pressure
                      Eating satisfying foods
                      No mood swings
                      No brain fog after meals
                      No acid reflux
                      No irritable bowel syndrome

Basically no reason to see a physician or take drugs to offset unhealthy eating. OMG, what will the medical/pharmaceutical companies do then?
ITS THEIR LONG-TERM EFFECTS IN THE POCKETBOOK THAT CONCERNS THEM THE MOST, NOT THE HEALTH/WEIGHT OF THE PEOPLE FOLLOWING A LOW-CARB LIFESTYLE.

ttdriver, I want to second the benefits of Atkins for IBS. No problems when I doing low carb. Also my blood pressure is 'near perfetct' (quote from nurse at last doctor's visit) after being high for my whole adult life. And that inlcudes the skinny years!

I get so sick and tired of people complaining about Atkins and what it may or may not do for people. Okay I know I need to keep a fairly strict handle on myself or I'm liable to eat rubbish, but I do know that the inches are most definitely coming off and by and large I'm eating a **** of a lot better than I have in YEARS.

It is so hard to find positive information about Atkins here in the UK and I've only seen lowcarb products in a few places so tend to keep my freezer stocked up with frozen meat and veg so I have no excuse for not eating right.

I intend to remain lowcarbing for the rest of my life.

Dr. Atkins said, "The best low carb food to eat, was food that was already low carb to begin with.".

In otherwords, stick to the whole stuff :nod
