  • WOW... Never thought that would happen!

    Hey All:

Well, about 4 weeks ago I thought that I'd introduce some more fruits into my meals, since I was worried that I wasn't getting enough. Since starting on this WOE, I've only eaten watermelon and strawberries, and never touch the scary stuff like pears, bananas, and mangos. So I figured I'd try oranges (1 per day, and quite sweet). They seemed harmless enough...

Everything was going well the first week, as I was maintaining my 2-4 lb loss per week. Then all of the sudden my weight stalled! I thought that it was just my body taking a rest, so I didn't worry about it. However, I kept on eating one orange a day, not thinking that they were causing my stall. After 2 weeks at 228, I re-evaluated what I was eating, and the only different item in my diet were the oranges.

So I cut them off a week ago... In the 7 days that have followed, I have lost 7 pounds! I cannot believe that one orange per day would cause such a stall, but I was and still am amazed.

Has this happened to anyone else? What fruits do you eat without worry that they will cause a stall? I'm on a modified OWL, and would like to have some fruits to snack on during the summer heat.

Hi Goldfinger! Good to finally see a post from you.
I just wanted to say HI, I really cant give you any advice on Oranges or any other fruit. I have only added 3-4 strawberries in once or twice a week and so far I have been Ok. But thats good information to share, It certainly may be of help to others, or me down the road.

I've found exactly the same problem with oranges, too.

It's really unfortunate as I'm emigrating next week and the farm is full of orange trees:sadblinky Last year I experimented with one orange a day and I stalled immediately, and after 5 days my blood-sugars de-stabilized and I had to go back into induction to sort them out again. I've found that having one once or twice a week doesn't seem too bad. Cherries and strawberries never seem to hurt me. Peaches are a total no-no. And as for that fig tree at the bottom of the garden...

Oranges are usally rated around 43 on the Glycemic index. Which would defnitley make a differnce regarding your blood sugar. Those suckers are up to 21 carbs a pop.

I found out that papaya is VERY bad for me. The reason I re-introduced it was because it always worked against constipation before I was on Atkins. I ate around a cup a day (11.2 net carbs). It not only caused to to stall, it also caused me to gain weight.

For me, I drink fresh squeezed OJ every morning without any problems. I also eat some protein with it, which will reduce the blood sugar spike.
Live in Florida and not drink fresh OJ? I think not!! :nono

But then, I am in lifetime maintenance and run 35 miles a week!

All the fruits I've tried...haven't hindered anything for me. I haven't gone as far as bananas, grapes and the real higher carbed ones, but I have included tangelos, apples, peaches, nectarines, strawberries canteloupe and watermelon and don't have any gain with them. I'm slowly working my way up to pre maintenance, while trying to lose the last 6 pounds, which is coming off 2 pounds a month...but I'm losing inches too so even if the scale stays the same, I'm getting smaller.

I added in the fruits real slow...and ate them with protein or fat of some sort. I tried eating them by themselves and my tummy tried to tell me it was hungry...but if I eat them with something or after a meal...they seem to work just fine.
