  • Family Dr. told me to cut down on my water?!!

I went to the doctor today, he wanted to go through my test results from three weeks ago, and see how the Synthroid he gave me is working. I told him how I'm walking twice a day, drinking 100 ozes of water a day and on Atkins and feeling WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!! :icondance :icondance

then he tells me to cut down to 64ozes of water a day because too much (something bout sodium and somethingelse I don't know, honestly wasn't listen past this point, because I was steaming) DR.Atkins had wrote a book for millions of people to be sucessful in weight loss, and has said that drink 64 ozes water daily PLUS 8ozs. for every 25 pounds you want to lose or somthing like that..... right?!! urplequ:

I LOVE MY WATER!! Rather have it than pepsi's which USE to be my second choice drink, but havent had any in 3 weeks... I'm just soooo :confused

My Dr told me the same thing, after my blood results came back with my soduim level low she said to stick with 64oz a day, plus all the veggies give water also.. She said I was hurting myself more than helping myself, drinking so much water...

Since then my blood test showed that my sodium level is back to normal and I actually feel better...

It is weird, I never thought I would be told to drink less water, but it makes sence to me now...

If you drink excessive amounts of water, its possible that it could throw off your electrolytes/potassium/sodium balance ...

I'd say if you feel fine, then do what you're doing .. doctors PRACTICE medicine .... that doesn't mean they know everything. :guns

I did cut back, and I am glad I did... I drink a cup of coffee in the Am and either a cup of tea or a diet soda on occasion..

I am not saying that you should stop drinking the water, my blood results showed me that I needed to and after I stopped drinking so much I felt way better...

My dr did tell me to drink a sports drink to help, but I just cut out the extra water and felt better..

Thats because of the imbalance in your electrolytes. He told you that because drinking pure water when dehydrated dilutes the body's salts. THe only problem is, they are full of sugar!

I suggest judge the amount of water you need by your activity level. If you are exercising vigorously like me or others on the board. Then 130+ oz is fine, but if you are stationary, stick to the 64oz at first, then take it from how your body is acting.

The reason we stress it so much on the board, is because we have to turn people who only drank water when they brushed their teeth, into accepting the fact that they have to drink alot of water lol

It is actually pretty common for an excess of water to screw with your electrolytes and the potaqssium and sodium. I used to drink between 1.5 and 2 gallons a day and I was told that was part of why I was getting dehydrated! It was this weird cycle of hydrating and drying up. I would not drink Gatorade type things unless you want pure sugar. i jsut add in Crystal Lite and iced tea. It's been okay since.

It's one of the formulas to figure out daily fluid maintenance. My post in this thread gives another way to figure it out.

I'm curious to know how much water you were drinking?

Also, to OP, 100oz does not seem excessive at all. that is just a bit over 3 liters. This is one piece of advice from your doctor that I would ignore. I think people start getting into problems when they drink over a gallon of water a day. And then not all people, like someone else said, depends on how active you are among other things.

I was drinking over a gallon a day, I trust my Dr and my blood results and when i stopped drinking so much water i did feel better and my blood work showed it... I am not telling everone to stop drinking water, but to be careful, if your body is telling you something is going on then maybe it is... I do still drink more water on occasion, if I am exercising more or out in the heat, but not on a daily basis.. Water is very important, I use to not drink any, now i drink enough to keep my body running the way it should...

I never did drink the sports drinks to help, not going to add sugar back to my life but i did what was best for my health and it has been a lot better for ME!!
