  • The No-Fad Diet = Crap

In a no-nonsense approach to weight loss, the American Heart Association’s new diet book offers options for the weak. Can’t give up pizza? Try eating two slices instead of your regular three. Craving ice cream? Try a sorbet.
Here's their brilliant strategy: EAT LESS! :icondance

Jeeze why didn't we all think of that?? :confused

I guess order the 6-piece McNugget instead of 9...hey I get it!! :icondance

Dudes let's all quit Atkins! Just order less food!!! :joy
    Anyone can do it!!! :nod
    -Iap How I did it

Hi Iap, :wave :wave :wave :wave :wave
Your right, I just can't believe American Heart and the ADA still refuse to see the light when it comes to sugar and carbs.

Congrats on climbing Mt Rainier. Isn't August a little late in the summer? My DH tried to convince me to climb Mt Fuji with them next month, but I declined as 3 flights of stairs is about my limit.....
Anxious to hear how the climb went. Ill be thinking about you

If one more person says "everything in moderation" I think I'll puke! It's like the mantra of those that don't want to give up anything. Before I got back on Atkins recently I was trying to just control myself with smaller portions. I was unsatisfied AND gained weight because I would crazy and have something bad after a day of "moderation".

Please don't be so quick to judge eating in moderation. It may not work in the 'losing' phases of Atkins but it sure works in the 'maintenance' phase.

But Perry, everytime I've heard it the subject has been a food that is full of sugar, or a bag of potato chips. It's always someone saying it so they can eat whatever they want (or trying to get me to do it!). I think moderation means something so different to an Atkid than it does to the general public. To me moderation is controlling the portions of the rungs I move up to. To me that's easy and healthy!

but guys, without realising it, you ARE eating in "moderation" - I mean that's what Dr A means by "eating till satisfied" and teaching you during Induction to eat only 3-4oz cheese, 1-2 tablespoon sourcream etc

You may not see that it's in moderation but I bet you as you go through OWL - you are eating "moderately" all the foods as you go through the rungs.

In that context, you are right (and so is tickle). I didn't understand what you meant by 'everything in moderation' when I first read your post.

Yep Perry, it's always been funny in the context of when it's been said to me. Either it was an overweight person unwilling to give up all the total junk they're eating, or a skinny person with the metabolism of a humming bird that really can eat everything. My problem is that trying to be moderate in certain foods (chip, crackers, ice cream, etc) will trigger my bad carb lust!

It's much easier to eat in moderation on Atkins due the satiating effect of fat and ketosis. Eating in moderation on the Standard American Diet is quite a different ballgame altogether. Case in point, last night, both my hubby and I were "splurging" on an evening dessert. I had a couple big strawberries in heavy cream and he proceeded to scoop out a heaping bowl of regular ice cream. I said to him, "do you want to see what a serving looks like?" I pulled out a 1/2 cup measuring cup and he blurted out "Oh please, right!!!"

I think moderate eating is impossible because the govt. wants us to eat like 6-year-olds. I suppose that is the only way to "maintain", but I know that not being able to adhere to the serving size is the main reason I got so obese in the first place. High carb foods make you want to overeat them because the surge on insulin we squirt out to digest them just makes the craving cycle keep on going until we eat so much that we feel sickly full. That lasts maybe a couple hours, then it starts all over again.

I have always been envious of folks who are able to truly eat in moderation, but these people need a heck of a lot more willpower than I have ever needed doing Atkins.

We are able to eat in moderation because we are eating quality foods that nourish us and satisfy us in a way that sweets and bad carbs aren't able to.

Could I have eaten spaghetti in moderation? DOUBT IT! or fries...or chips...or *name that crappy food*? Nope!

But 2 boiled eggs and I'm full.

I call this one of the "locked in the closet" diets. If I was locked in a closet, and people were passing my food to me under the door, then of course I'd lose weight eating that way. Same thing with slim fast, weight watchers, the grapefruit diet, etc. They ALL work if you can actually stick to them as written, but that's where the hard part comes in. And that's why I love Atkins, because it's so easy to eat in moderation. It's not a willpower thing, it's just a natural "I'm satisfied, I'll stop eating now" reaction.

Effie, that's so true! Hubby is not on Atkins and I'm not even tempted by what he's eating. I'm not 'avoiding' anything right now, I'm just plain not interested. In fact looking at some of the things other people eat just kinda makes me queezy.

plus does anyone think that one packet of chips is "moderation"?

These days, they make 6-8oz bag of chips and chances are when we start eating it, we don't stop till it's finished!!!
If these bags had been 2-3oz ones, then I think we'd all have had a better chance a long time ago, to even vaguely learn to eat in moderation.
