Hi - I know I'm just a stupid Englishwoman but I keep reading about beef jerky and I'm just desperate to know what it is. Can someone enlighten me? Is there a British equivalent and can you eat it on Induction?

First off, you aren't a stupid Englishwoman.

Secondly, beef jerky is an North American food. It was a method the Natives used to preserve meat and the early colonists copied in order to preserve meat. Basically it's thinly sliced meat that's soaked in a marinade and slowly dried. The result is a chewy, tough dried piece of meat. It's now eaten as a snack, but in the days before refrigeration, it was used as part of the meal. They would soak it in water to rehydrate and the meat was then cut up and cooked in stews and such.

I'm not sure if there is an equivalent to it in the UK. Maybe one of our UK mods, Richt or Elizellen, might know....

Here's a site that explains the different types of dried meats, including jerky. Maybe that will help you find what the UK equivalent is

I have never eaten it but I do know it is long strips of cured meat.
We do have a shop near us that sells loads of it! They also sell small packs of it in bags like crisps.

It is a south african 'ethnic' and diabetic foods speciality shop. They do have a website www.allergyfreeheaven.co.uk but I couldn't get their website up to see if they do mail order.

A search on www.yell.co.uk for Allergy Free Heaven should give you their phone number so you could ring them and ask.

From what our US-based members have said you will need to ask about sugar as some jerky is cured with sugar.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I love beef jerky! It can be higher in carbs though because of the marinade, but a nice snack esp when traveling and not having access to fresh meat.

It does get jammed in my teeth though. I can only eat beef jerky if I have floss! :yikes

Thanks to everyone for the replies - I know I've had it now - in Germany I think they call it Bunderfleisch.
I think it's great but I guess up here in the frozen wilds of York (which is neither frozen nor wild now I come to think of it) I'll have difficulty getting hold of it so thanks for the websites, I may be able to order online!
More grub to add to the list - but I'll check the sugar content too!

I buy Jerky at Meijers grocery store. They have one that is made with Splenda, and is very low in carbs.

First of all we don't use that word. :nono (the S word. my 3 and 4 year old are trained that it is a "bad" word and come running to tattle whenever they hear it) lol-- Google to find out how to make your own jerkey, less expensive and you can control what is put in ie less or no carbs. If you have a food dehydrater you are already ahead of the game!! It is possible to make it in your oven, but I am not sure about settings and time. Good luck!!

Here is one site with info and recipes for marinades - looks as if you could find some Atkins-legal spices etc to make it..
It gives directions on making it in your oven

OOps - missed off the link
