Wannabethin, I got heavy when I changed from an active job to a desk job, but didn't change eating habits. I didn't find Atkins until about three years later. I had great success, lost 56 pounds, felt great about myself and about life. Then I made a move from my hometown to about 4 and a half hours away and started to eat poorly again from depression. After that I found it a lot harder to get back on track (the idea of eggs repulsed me after the first go around with Atkins). So, I tried other options to see if other things might work for me as well (they didn't). Here I am again with Atkins. And even though I know this WOE works, I still find it difficult to stay focused and continue this WOE for my weightloss and health benefits. I don't know why. Wish I knew. Not sure if I understood your posts right, but maybe this at least explains my "trials" with other eating plans.
      Sarah,

I just didn't understand the point of this thread unless the poster was never overweight and always followed the Atkins WOL. It's obvious that most people discovered Atkins at some point in their lives and prior to that were searching for whatever they could find to help them lose weight.

Stick to this WOL and I KNOW you'll do fine. Try making some new recipes that will excite you. I think new recipes are key to success on Atkins. People tend to always eat the same foods prepared the same way and get bored. Good luck to you.

That's kind of funny 'cause everyone accuses me of being black and white. I should introduce them to you to get them off my back LOL.

I have commented diet programs that have their dieters eat prepackaged, pre-measured meals, while claiming to "teach" dieters how to eat properly.

Don't you think that the title of this thread "People just don't get it" is judgmental? Wouldn't you say that you "just didn't get it" before you became an Atkins follower?

I guess we need to hear from the original poster of this thread as to what exactly was his point and if he "just didn't get it" before he became an Atkins follower.
I think you should take the time to read the thread contents BEFORE jumping to any conclusions.

I was watching the Tv the other night and This commercial for Nutrasystem came on.

For those of you who don't know about it, its a low GI diet, they prepackage foods for you for the entire week and send them to you. I think its around 250 a month.

Anyway, the commercial says this, "We will teach you how to determine Good Carbs from bad carbs, no more avoiding them all!. Then it goes on to show a picture of chocalate cake, and a lady saying, "Any diet that allows me to eat chocalate cake is the diet for me!" I just don't get it....don't these people understand? or is ignorance really that bliss?

I guess people see dieting as a "Fad" thing to do. Not really to be taken serious, just something people do sometimes. Almost a joke
It's more of a potshot at Nutrasystem's marketing of a "quick and easy" weight loss scheme while claiming to teach dieters a healthy eating style than of anything else, imo. Subsequent posters (including me) interpreted it in a similar way and have written in their posts that weight loss isn't quick and "easy" in the sense that you need to work to lose weight.

I read the thread contents. I just have a problem with the title. Some people are desparate to lose weight and will do ANYTHING to achieve weight loss. I'm sure we've all followed some pretty ridiculous diets in our day. So I guess we all "just didn't get it". Were we all like Betty? Stupid?

I always question how losing weight eating programmed meals is gonna help you in the long-run. I mean sure, anybody who is limited to eating certain amounts of selected foods will no doubt have success for as long as they are following it. But to me, that's just not reality.

Sooner or later, you have to change your mindset about food PERMANENTLY. With no assistance. You have to set your own limits; you have to stay within those limits. It takes discipline, focus and determination and you can't package that.

I believe that's why so many people on these pre-packaged plans succeed initially, but eventually gain the weight back. They simply don't have the discipline to incorporate PERMANENT changes into their lives. And we all know that without a permanent lifestyle change, there is virtually no hope to keeping the weight off.

It's not that people just don't always get it...a LOT of people out there get it...they just don't want to face the fact that they need to lose weight yet. There are a lot of sacrifices that people are unwilling to make...I knew I needed to lose weight, and put the idea in my mind about 6 months ago that I was going to just bite the bullet and do it...but it took gaining about 20 more pounds before I was just like "OK ENOUGH!" I couldn't go on anymore the way I had been eating...I tried portion control, didn't work...then my dear friend wanted me to be her diet buddy, and she was doing atkins...I bought the book and found this site and voila! A lot of people NEED things like this board to keep them in check...imagine doing atkins alone..totally alone, not knowing anyone else who did it or even supported the fact that you were trying to lose weight...I dunno about you guys, but in a situation like that I'd last maybe 3-4 days. Support is everything. Without it I wouldn't be on Atkins anymore...I'm not only doing this for myself, I'm doing it because I don't want to let others down. I want to become a great example on this board to future Atkineers, and I want to show people that ANYONE can do this, no matter how weak-willed you may feel. I want everyone else to feel loved and supported, and not feel like they can't share their obstacles with people here in fear of being put down or criticized. We are all human, and we all share the same goal.

                - "Do not judge lest you be judged. "For in the way that you judge you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. "And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:1-5)

Anytime there's a different view on certain topics, people are accused of being 'judgemental' or 'unsupportive'. That gets old, fast. I give support in a different way than alot of people and am often termed as being judgemental and unsupportive. But that's how I am, and it's probably not going to change. And some folk actually benefit from a different perspective.

I try not to be judgmental, but I *do* know what works. After 30 years of low-fat, fat-free nonsense, finally, the truth came out with Atkins. And success followed.

So what, I'm narrow minded .. I'm successfully narrow-minded! :yes

Just want you to know Alliecat and TTdriver, I was not calling you out. I am really not calling anyone out, it's just the way things are said on this forum sometimes that gets to me. I know you two both have good intentions. Just know that everyone here may not be where you are yet. For a lot of us, this diet is challenging, we haven't been on it for years, and we still struggle. I don't believe cheating once is failure...to me failure is when we fall down and can't get ourselves back up. We learn from our experiences and it makes us a stronger person. Me anyways. But I think both of you have great things to say and do a good job at being an example of what we all strive to be.

No, cheating once isn't failure, and you are doing great. I just hate to see a one cheat lead to a 'I can't quit cheating' thing.. then what.

Yes we are all at different stages. I KNOW when I was 21 years old, my head was NOT ready for a permanent WOE like this. All things happen in due time, in their own time, when they're supposed to. This WOE came along at the right time for me fortunately. If it had come along any earlier, I probably wouldn't have had the results cause I wasn't ready.

                            Peace out!

I agree with you on the being ready thing...some people come into diets because they want to lose weight, but aren't really willing to put in the work yet...there are just some things that take time to let go of...I have been mentally preparing myself for dieting for a while, because when I do it, I wanted to do it right, and not be a failure...I know myself well, and I know that if I just failed miserably at a diet because I wasn't mentally ready for it, it would just send me spiraling...I'd probably be depressed and end up eating even more and gaining even more weight. This board is really good for inspiration and was kind of the catalyst that set off my journey.
