  • Substitution of Carbs

This is bound to be a controversial subject. As part of my Atkins regime I have started going to the gym, doing the usual cardiovascular exercises together with weight work. This is giving me a buzz! I guess this is keeping me totally focused. I have a long-term injury to my left Knee (osteoarthritis) a result of many years training on roads and usually find any kind of exercise eventually leads to injury, followed by the inability to train. This then results in depression and weight gain. I wonder how the forum feels about using whey protein powder to help increase muscle growth? If I allocate a small amount of allowable Carb value from my 20g’s + OWL allowance. The carb values are small but significant.
    Typical Values per 100g
    Energy 405cals
    Protein 80g
    Carbohydrate 4.5g
    Of which sugars 4.5g
    Fat 7.5g
    Sodium 250mg
    1 Serving is approx 30g
    Sweetener Aspartame Acesulfame-K
Guess the sweetener could be a problem
I would add that my weight is not my overall goal. I just want rid of FAT!!
Remaining Focused, Buzzing and a great will to exceed all my expertations…Atkins is helping build a great new me!!!

I use this product http://www.iherb.com/ultilocawhey.html and it only has 1 gram of carbs and 20 grams of protein.

But I only use it on days when my protein levels are low, to try and get them up some.

You may want to post this in the Exercise forum, just in case it gets overlooked here by those who could give some helpful insights. :nod

My advice? Stick to doing one thing at a time. If you are aiming to lose fat, then do that. If you want to gain muscle, wait to do that. With regular strength training along with losing weight you will gain a LMB. But not as much as you would if you were sticking to training them soley for that purpose.

Have you tried Designer Whey protein Powder? It only has 2gr. carbs and that is from the lactose I believe. The sweetener is stevia.

I use them from time to time, like Cajun only when my protein levels are low or allow it. I like to make a smoothie out of vanilla protein powder with soy milk and berries and ice. I like to take them on the road when i'm travelling.

Be careful though...too much protein is not a good thing either (i believe your body will turn excess protein into glucose, and then fat) Keep your eye on your protein levels.

Here's a sticky on protein guidelines:

Hi Colin, yes I am a southern girl, through and through. :yes Louisiana is just east of Texas (everyone usually knows where Texas is!).

As to my current favorite low carb recipe, I don't exactly have one right now. I just discovered the microwave flax bread recipe and can envision numerous possibilities with that one - and plan on experimenting with something this afternoon.

I'll let you know how it turns out!

Microwave flax bread is one of my favourites although I haven’t made it for a couple of weeks. That said I’m off to buy some flax this afternoon, you’ve just put me in the mood!! I found just a little chopped onion fried, together with grated cheese, bacon and paprika make excellent savoury bread.
