  • Blood test question

I posted this on the thyroid board but I'm not sure how much traffic that section gets and I'm hoping to get some answers before tomorrow so I'm posting here too. Thanks!

Monday I went to our local dental school & had two teeth pulled. A wisdom tooth & another one that had broken off at the gum.

I get a phone call today from a gal there at the school - apparently one of the students cut himself on an instrument that had been used in my mouth. They are asking that I come in for a blood test so that this student can feel comfortable that I haven't given them aids or some other blood disease. Needless to say I'M ALSO demanding this person be tested too - who's to say that THEY don't have some type of disease!!

So - I am going in tomorrow for the blood test at the dental school. My question is this: I am due to have a blood test anyhow for my thyroid condition. My doctor won't renew my prescription until I do - I have one month left. It's funny because I can't afford to go in right now for the test. We don't have insurance and the test and then dr's visit runs over $200. Do you think that this test that will be run tomorrow ( at no charge to myself ) would also test my thyroid??? I would love to submit their test results to my doc and see if it would work.

    What do you think??

What a horrible situation to be in.

Although I am not totally sure how to answer your question, I don't think they will fork the bill for a full panel test. They are basically going to run a cheap blood screen. Although I maybe wrong, you could ask them to and see what they say.

That is a horrible situation! I hope they were nice about it at least.

My guess is that they wouldn't run that sort of test. They want to make sure he hasn't been exposed to something, and a thyroid condition on your end wouldn't do him any harm.

The blood test they are running on you regarding the instrument injury on the student are probably an HIV test and an hepatitis test. You can ask them to run a thyroid test on the blood they take from you, but be sure to ask if they will charge extra for it because they are only obligated to do the HIV, hepatitis testing.

By the way, the student most likely HAS had a HIV test done after the accident and is most likely taking HIV medications as added insurance. Hepatitis is a different story because students in medical, nursing and dental schools are required to have Hepatitis vaccinations as part of their school requirements or at least to show proof that they are immune.

Darn!! I was hoping that I could kill two birds with one stone!! AND not have to pay for it!

Oh well. I will still ask what they would charge to run the test I need.

And yes, they were nice about it. I guess it happens a couple of times a month that someone gets poked and this is their standard procedure.

          Thanks!
