:wave Everything You Need to Know About Sucralose

    This and more:
Is the chlorine in sucralose potentially harmful?

No. Chlorine in the form of chloride is a safe and natural element present in many of the foods and beverages that we eat and drink every day. It is in most natural water supplies, and is also found in lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, melons, peanut butter and table salt. In the case of sucralose, the addition of chlorine to the sucralose molecule is what makes sucralose free of calories. Sucralose is an essentially inert molecule and it passes through the body without being broken down for calories.

        Re: Sucralose Concern

If we stopped eating everything that various studies say is bad for us.. well, what would we eat??

I agree with Brook, and go with the "live by moderation"..

I do enjoy my splenda, and try to stay within my 3 servings a day

My feeling is this, whatever is in the SPlenda cannot be any worse for me than all this fat and high blood pressure. It it is my time, it is my time. If I am trying to diet, then anything that makes it easier, like Splenda, is worth it.

              Re: Sucralose Concern

I agree, everything in moderation....but what about those that drink 2 or 3 liters of diet drinks a day? For years at a time? There are those types of people out there...I was one of them once! I try to avoid artifical sweeteners whenever I can. I also started using stevia...and am very pleased with the taste, and the knowledge that is at least natural, as compared to most other AFs.

                Re: Sucralose Concern

I understand your concern.... I'm just saying I'm not one of those people who worries about everything I read or hear.....and I'm sure I SHOULD be more concerned.....

I'm saying I think I've got WAY bigger fish to fry than worrying about Splenda....

I think people should be informed... and it's a good article... and if anybody has bad effects or whatever ...make their decision..

I've been drinking TAB since it was introduced in the 60's.... I was a little kid and loved the flower looking things on the bottle...

I have a science teacher background.... so naturally I was really concerned about the whole saccaharin thing.. the link to kidney cancer..... but I kept drinking it anyway.....

I'm 50 now.... still love TAB..... maybe I'll die next year of cancer caused by TAb....

                who knows?

I guess I don't worry enough about the things I should...

don't get me wrong... I appreciate the info... and the article.... it's just that I don't sweat all that stuff...

I had a coach in college who had a poster that was something like....

                nicotine will kill you
too much sugar will kill you
                salt will kill you
                etc. etc.

                and the last line said

and if one of those doesn't get you... worrying about it will....

                  Re: Sucralose Concern

I would say if you have a fear of splenda, don't use it. If not, enjoy it in moderation. I believe they have been using sucralose for 15-20 years in Canada. On the International Food Information Counsel website ( http://www.ific.org/publications/bro...alosebroch.cfm ) it claims,

"Sucralose was discovered in 1976. More than 100 scientific studies conducted over a 20-year period have conclusively demonstrated that sucralose is safe for consumption."

On this website is further states,
"The data from the studies were independently evaluated by international experts in a variety of scientific disciplines, including toxicology, oncology, teratology, neurology, hematology, pediatrics and nutrition. Importantly, comprehensive toxicology studies, designed to meet the highest scientific standards..."

                  About Chlorine is says,
"Is the chlorine in sucralose potentially harmful?

No. Chlorine in the form of chloride is a safe and natural element present in many of the foods and beverages that we eat and drink every day. If you are still afraid there might be potentially harmful side effects associated with the use of Splenda, you might give Stiva a try.

I myself use Splenda and products containing Splenda, though I do not use it daily.

                    Re: Sucralose Concern

I performed a wedding last night, and when a set break came up, the bride walked over and invited my crew and I for late lunch. Very nice. We walked over to the lunch table and I was delighted to see 2 tables of lunch. One was so gooey and disgustingly full of sugar and starch, but the other table (Glory Hallelulah) was a low carb lunch table. The bride must be a low carber with low carb friends! There was all kinds of meats, veggies, and desserts with little cards beside them explaining the ingredients, carb counts etc. All of them made with splenda and varying in carb counts from 5 grams a piece to 17 grams a piece. As impressed as I was with all this, I settled for some turkey and cheese and still skipped the allowed desserts. But what a treat THAT was to see! Alot of work went into that little table. Ironic that they rented the chocolate fountain from my company though heh heh.

                      Re: Sucralose Concern

Obviously, I'm with Brook and the other pro-Splenda users on this board. (wink)

I don't really want to voice my feelings too much about what Dr. Mercola writes about Splenda, but suffice is to say that I think it is unfair for him to make such sweeping and scary, and in my opinion, unfounded judgments of a product that potentially helps millions of people enjoy life a bit more and stick with their WOE. When sugar and subsequently sweetness was taken out my life, I found Splenda to be a lifesaver. I e-mailed Dr. Mercola one time to tell him about my family and our experiences with Splenda, being the first author to have used Splenda in my books (Almost 14 years ago and for many years since) and did not even receive the courtesy of a reply. Clearly he is not interested in any good news about Splenda.

My family has been the world's largest consumer of Splenda, and our sons were around 4 and 7 when we started using it. Now they are 18 and 21 and perfectly healthy.

Here is my story for anyone who may be interested (some of you have probably read it already):

                          Re: Sucralose Concern

I only use Splenda when it's indicated in recipes that I've got from this board - I gave up on sugar in my tea or coffee several years ago. It's like other people have said: decide for yourself if you want to use something and then use it in moderation. Common sense is a great tool if we only use it right!

anything that is chemically altered is not a whole food.

The decision is yours of course. Moderation is always key. However, if you believe in only whole real food, splenda is not one.

Of course Atkins had a monetary agenda.......that's why he sold the book! If you wrote a book you too would have an agenda to sell what you wrote.
