  • Amoxicillin, Ketosis & Anxiety

First of all I'm a big baby. I have to take Amoxicillin because I have oral surgery coming up next week and they suspect an infection. I just started this morning and I'm always freaked out taking any medicine.

So if someone can reassure me that Amoxicillin is no big deal, I would appreciate it. Because just the IDEA of taking it makes me anxious, all my nerves are on edge right now and I'm worried I'm going to have a reaction, faint, turn orange, die.. I dunno. Just BAD stuff lol.

Question I have is two-fold. I'm on extended induction and when I've taken antibiotics before (man, last time was years ago) I ate yogurt too to replace the good bacteria. I can't eat yogurt yet so what other options are there? And does medication like Amoxicillin kick you out of ketosis?

What does of Amoxi are you takeing? Have you had problems with yeast before? It don't knock you out of ketosis. Only upping your carbs will.

Take a good Probiotic (good bacteria) in between doses of the antibiotics. It's best to get one that has strains other than just acidophilus, as the various strains occupy different areas of your digestive tract.

Truth be told, yogurt isn't that great for countering the effects of antibiotics because most yogurts are loaded with sugar, which feeds the nasty bacterias you're trying to get rid of.

If you have a GNC or other health food store near you, ask for a full spectrum probiotic, and don't bother with the refrigerated stuff. Two brands I like are PB8 and Primal Defense, although PD is some powerful stuff and expensive.

        Good luck!

actually some antibiotics can effect your blood sugar levels and will coem with a diabetic warning.

since your immune system is active your body is pumping out chemicals and it could effect upuir blood sugar controls and your ketone levels making you think you are out of ketosis as defined by Dr Atkins as the burning of fats for fuel.

Antibiotics, no matter in what form have always knocked me out of ketosis. Hate to tell ya. BUT..... everyone is different. Usually takes me approx. 5-7 days to get back in ketosis after I finish the script.

My ketostix are showing trace. Usually they're purple. I've tried really hard not to use the little buggers but I caved today. I guess if I go out of ketosis I'll just keep eating normally and figure I'll be back in later.

The amoxicillin isn't too bad. My tummy feels queasy pretty often (I do take with food) but it's better than an infection. I'm ashamed to be such a big baby about meds but I have gotten better. Once upon a time I wouldn't even take an asprin. I also got pro-biotics acidophilus from GNC so thank-you for all the good advice.

I'm on Amoxicillin right now (root canal). I just entered ketosis and am having no problems (again).

                  Your mileage may vary though.

Also don't worry about "trace" .. it could be that you had too much water.

                    Re: Amoxicillin, Ketosis & Anxiety

I took my last ones on Sunday, still in ketosis and still losing (down over 50 now!!). Monday I had my surgery (all went well). I did discover an interesting thing over the weekend though.

For years I've had palpitations in my chest. I assumed they had something to do with my anxiety. The palpitations got so bad - they were happening 4-5 times an hour - at the end of the week I went in to a walk-in clinic to have them checked out. The Dr. there listened for a long while and said my heart sounded great but she thinks I have a hiatal hernia, she hears stomach noises in the chest cavity. And that can be the spasms I'm feeling, not heart. And the antibiotics were probably upsetting my stomach and I got them more than usual.

I know I have reflux, one of the benefits of Atkins is that went away. In fact, until this past week I've not had heart burn or anything any more. I had never heard of a hiatal hernia before though. She gave me Prevacid and told me to take them for a month. If it's not better in 2 weeks, give my regular Dr. a call, but to let him know either way next time I see him what she suspects.

But you know something? Now that I know what the freaking palpitations are I bet some of this anxiety will go away. Every time In feel that thumping in my chest for no reason my senses go on high alert. I feel a little silly thinking it was heart, but I'm pretty happy it's not.

glad you found the reason and can lessen your anxiety.

Glad your surgery went well and you are on the road to recovery

FYI hiatal hernia is when the stomach protrudes upward through the diapharm muscle
