Bottom Line: Restricting Calories is what Causes Weight Loss

A recent research study conducted by the North American Association for the Study of Obesity showed that Atkins dieters cut their normal daily caloric intake by 1,000 calories while following the Atkins plan. Additional research has shown that during the ongoing weight loss phase, Atkins dieters consumed only 1500 calories a day on average, much less than their previous caloric intake. Furthermore, in the research study presented in The Annals of Internal Medicine above, scientists found that in both the low-fat diet group and in the Atkins diet group, calorie consumption was reduced as compared to the participant's previous diets. This only goes to show what we've known all along as the bottom line in weight loss: calories eaten must be less than calories burned for weight loss to occur. With so little food choices on the Atkins diet, it's easy to see why people eat fewer calories and therefore lose weight. There's nothing magical behind the hype about low carb plans.

There was a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association published late last year that compared Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers and the Zone. You can't get the full text to the article anymore unless you subscribe to the Journal, but there's a table in it that showed the average caloric intake for these diets---they were all between 1200-1600 calories daily.

Anyhow, I think this comment is kind of funny:
Additional research has shown that during the ongoing weight loss phase, Atkins dieters consumed only 1500 calories a day on average, much less than their previous caloric intake.
Well, of course! I weighed 60 pounds more than I do now, why would I need to eat the same number of calories I needed to eat when I was fatter? When I started Atkins, I needed roughly 2500 calories daily. I currently need about 1850.

Common sense: smaller person needs less calories than a larger person.

This is a really, really funny comment and shows the ignorance of the person writing this article:
With so little food choices on the Atkins diet, it's easy to see why people eat fewer calories and therefore lose weight.
This is an example of the "little food choices" I've had to formulate my menu around today:

    Breakfast:
scrambled eggs with fresh basil, mozzarrella and sun-dried tomato

    Lunch:
Turkey with a salad of cannelini beans, mixed greens (lettuce, spinach, sorrell, parsley, mint), jicama, in a mustard viniagrette

    Dinner:
Meatballs in a creamy cheese sauce
    Celery root-cauliflower mash
sauteed broccoli rabe with garlic and onion
Strawberry-peach parfait--strawberries and peaches layered with whipped cream and a chopped nut-wheat germ mixture

    Snack:
    2 ounces of Brie cheese

Compared to my pre-Atkins low fat menu:
    Breakfast
    2 slices toast with jelly

    Snack:
1 apple or another fresh fruit

    Lunch:
Salad sandwich---salad greens, no dressing in a bread roll.

    Snack:
    Orange juice or granola bar

    Dinner:
Some kind of chicken with pasta
    a steamed veggie
    fruit juice

Yeah, I have a more narrow menu now than I did pre-Atkins

Very true. When there were loads of carbs included in my diet, I was consuming a little over 2,000 calories a day. Now I consume 1,200-1,500.

Suspicion confirmed: This person who wrote this sentence is an idiot.

Well of course, the less calories you consume, the more weight you will lose. Add in rigorous exercise, and you'll burn even more calories and lose faster. That's not rocket science. The beauty of Atkins is, the calories we consume satisfy us naturally which results in the need to eat less.

Will somebody please tell me what food choices I've been missing for the past 4 years that I've maintained a 40 pound weight loss?

Absolutely - this is the beauty of Atkins - I find it is easy to control my food intake as what I eat fills me up so I dont need to eat starchy and sugary food!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

If you eat less (no matter what you are eating) you will loose weight. The only reason why I chose Atkins was because I wanted to chill out on sugars (pie, candy, etc.)

I doubled both my fat and caloric intake after starting on Atkins - while maintaining the same 30-minute-a-day, 4-day-a-week treadmill walking I'd done since the fifth or sixth grade. It was the starches and foods with added sugars that were keeping me heavy. So much for that dietician's theory! I cannot imagine going back to low-calorie - what a nightmare that was.

What got my attention with this article and every other copy of it around, is that they assume with the human body, everything is black and white. Not everyone has the same reactions to every food. Sure, I could lose weight on 1500 calories a day of chocalate, but is it healthy? No!

They basically assume, which strikes me as odd, that everyone who is overweight is that way because they overeat, which is a total lie. How do you overeat? you can only eat until you are fool. The thing is, foods that are lower in fat and higher in carbohydrates take longer to fill you up. I never heard anyone say to me, "I got so depressed today, I ate ten steaks!". Its always, "I got so depressed today and ate a whole gallon of ice cream".

These people need an education about foods, how the body reacts to them, and how to figure out whats right for you.

Re: SHOCKING: take a look plz

This argument has been around for a while now. While it is true that most Atkiners do consume less calories while on Atkins, and this does in a fundamental way contribute to weight loss, there are still other things to consider. Off the top of my head:

                      1) Not all calories are the same - almost half of calories from protein get burned up merely by digesting them. So, those on a moderate-high protein diet like atkins will be more likely to have their metabolisms revving.

                      2) Low fat diets have been shown again and again to be less effective than lowering carbs when it comes to amount of weight lost AND the percentage of fat lost. There is no faster way for the human body to shed fat than when in ketosis!

                      3) While it is true that in general Atkiners do take in fewer calories, there really is no limit to the amount of food we can eat. We normally do not count or restrict calories. We are instructed to eat until we are satisfied...as long as we eat acceptable foods. Thus, we do not put ourselves in danger of light-headedness, dizziness, and the other health problems that affect people who severelt limit their caloric intake.

                      4) Fat is sorely underrated. It has the most flavor, it makes you feel full faster, and it is not dangerous unless it is eaten in conjunction with sugar. (After 6 weeks of eating eggs, cheese, and bacon for breakfast, and countless steaks, burgers, mayonnaise...etc...my cholesterol actually dropped from 220 to 143! My doctor was floored!)
Not only that, but fat makes your skin look supple and healthy. People who lose lots of weight on Atkins still look young and healthy. People who have lost weight on other types of diets always end up looking old and haggard and their skin looks bad...that's just my observation.

                      5) Last but most importantly...We must remember that Atkins should not be viewed in toto as a weight-loss diet. Dr Atkins, Dr Eades, Dr Agatston, and other low-carb gurus were not nutritionists bent on making a buck. They were real medical doctors who wanted to improve people's health...the weight loss is only a symptom of a healthier body. The benefits on avoiding sugar and the multitude of health problems that are associated with insulin resistance can never be overestimated.

Re: SHOCKING: take a look plz

I think it is true that a low calorie diet of any type will work.....for a while. It's whether or not you can keep it going that is the problem. I know a lot of people who go on low fat diets who eat like 600-900 calories a day and think this is normal. I wouldn't have ANY energy if I ate like that.

I don't think I eat any less calories than I used to pre-atkins. I never ate breakfast, for example. I mean sure some days I would eat more calories than others, but I do that now too! (see my 1900 calorie day this week, for example - I was starving!).

I also think you get more food for the same amount of calories. My friend is doing fitday and is on a low fat diet. She eats fat free yogurt for breakfast, coffee with that powdered creamer stuff, a slim fast for lunch, and a salad for dinner. That's an all liquid diet, for pete's sakes.

Course, usually she breaks the diet at the end of the day since she's SO HUNGRY. ;-P Her fitday is pretty interesting.

The caloric intake rule doesn't apply to everyone although I expect it does for most folks. Dr. Atkins himself has cited examples of individuals who actually increased their caloric intake on this WOE versus their old diet and actually lost weight rapidly!

and amen to the insulin comment. I know so many people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes who's doctors put them on a low carb diet. If it's that bad for you, then why do doctors put you on this kind of diet in order to alleviate a disease usually associated with high weight?
