  • Jean Sizes

In other threads, people have talked about their clothing sizes and I am just plain confused. I know that sizes fluctuate with every designer but I don't see my pant size reducing significantly.
I started this WOL at 170 lbs. and at the time had only one pair of jeans; a size 13 (tight). Now, almost 6 months later, I have 2 pair of Levis and 2 pair of Mudd that are a size 11. The other day I bought 2 pairs of capris, both a size 14!!! Talk about discouraging
Am I just buying from the wrong places or the wrong brand? Mind you, I like low-waisted pants and I don't like them tight. I have a 28" waist, 34" hips, and 21" thighs.
I know this seems trivial, but I was hoping that I would be able to see size 8's again.
    Thanks for listening.

    Re: Jean Sizes

I think clothes sizes vary a bunch.. the only thing I can be SURE of is Levi's.... men's Levi's.. it's what I wear most... and the 36 waist ones I wear that were very tight and uncomfortable are now wearable...

as far as other pants... even when I was 180... I had sizes from 14 to 20.. just depending on how loose they were.. and who made them...

I have some Bill Blass stretch capri's that 14 has always been fine.. and they weren't even tight... but then I have some big size looser fitting capri's with matching shirt/jacket....

I've decided clothes sizes don't matter as much as MY size does...

although.. when I met my husband.. I could easily wear size 27 waist Levi's...

27/32... I'll probably never see that again....

but I WOULD love to see a 32/32 again....

      Re: Jean Sizes

I always have found this frustrating too...women's pants, and jeans in particular, are cut somewhat different from style to style, manufacturer to manufacturer...but then think about how women are built...we are all so different, too...I recall a time about 2 years ago when my mom, my sister and I all wore, in general, size 12...if we were side by side, no one would have ever guessed that we were all in the same size since our heights and shapes are all very different. Seems like men have it so much easier...know the waist size and they are pretty much all set without ever having to spend an hour in a dressing room!

I agree with Kyle I would love for manufacturers to make sizes for women just like they do for men, less room for error. It is horrible that they can play mind games with us because of sizes. I find the more expensive the close the smaller they fit, the wal-mart brands are roomier than the same size of there pricer counterparts. Ever shop for a wedding dress? OMG What man came up with the idea of making wedding dresses run small???? Wouldn't you think it would be better for it to be the other way? Make the lovely bride feel like she is a 6 instead of a 10?? ARG!!!

The thing that helped me the most is find a designer that you like and fits the best, and just stick with it.

With our clothes, its easy, I've never had to try a pair of pants on. The only pants I don't wear are Levis, I hate the way they fit me.

I can wear anything from a 14 - 20. Like today i'm wearing a pair of jean capris that are a 18???? So i think it just depends on the maker.

I agree...........I have size 14 up to 20's. It all depends, but I'm with you, I mentally feel much better in the smaller sizes. It's weird but the majority of my clothes are 18's.

                  Re: Jean Sizes

I will suggest this about the sizes - the odd numbers are junior sizes and those are made for young girls that haven't usually developed curves. For adult women and especially for those of us who are more, ummmm, voluptuous , try Misses sizes (the even numbers), or plus (womens) sizes. Depending on the store, plus sizes can start as low as a 12 and go up from there. Misses generally stop at size 20. Plus sizes are usually fuller in the hip/thigh areas, and Misses are usually fuller than Juniors to make room for curves. In tops, the Juniors sizes don't usually have as roomy of a bust area as Misses/Plus sizes.

BTW, if you shop at Walmart, their Faded Glory brand runs small, sometimes really small!

As to jeans, I just LOVE my low rise Levi's I got from Walmart, but apparently they aren't going to carry this style much longer, as some designers are going for higher waists again. So when I get some extra $$, I plan on buying these jeans in smaller sizes to have as I shrink.

yes, i agree...i can range a few sizes depending on the designer. don't get too worried about what the actual number says...like someone mentioned...just try on those old jeans and watch them get bigger on you!

                      Re: Jean Sizes

I hate jeans sizing. I used to be a size 22, and dropped to a 16. I have two pairs of size 16's that I CAN still wear (mind you I gained weight back this summer as I went off this WOL for a bit) - they're DKNY brand and MixIt brand from JcPenny. I also have a pair of Wal-Mart Faded Glory jeans size 16 that I couldn't get into even before I gained some weight back.

I have a pair of cheap non-popular brand jeans that are size 24 and too tight, and a size 18 pair that are wayyyy toooo big and look the size of 26's.....

it's crazy how sizing goes....I just look at it like this - the more you pay, the more room you get. Expensive jeans (except Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren who expect women to be twigs still at size 12 in their jeans) seem to be more generous in their sizing.

All that said, with all my jeans, I have no idea what size I am!

                        Re: Jean Sizes

Even within the same cut and style of jeans, sometimes they vary! I have some Levi 515's where the smaller labeled size is actually the larger pair. The difference was they were a long cut... and I guess they decided that if someone was tall they deserved to have a smaller size label?

Go for the fit, try to ignore the label.

Guess if you are going to compare sizes, you need to stick with the same brand and style..
