  • Veggie Question

Okay, Dr. A says to eat 3 c. of salad veggies or 2 c. salad veggies and 1 c. other veggies. I got that part. But why does he say "up to" 3 cups per day? Why can't you have more than that of salad veggies? If I have quite a few carbs left in the day and want another raw spinach salad, why can't I have that? Does too many veggies stall weight loss, even if you're still within your daily carb limit?

No one got fat over eating veggies. If you wanted additional veggies I don't see why you couldn't as long as you continue to lose.

      Plenty of overweight vegetarians.

I think it's fine to eat a little more but only if you're hungry.
However portion control is an important part of any diet, even with veggies.

If the veggies you eat contain high amounts of fiber (like baby spinach), then you won't have to eat much of it to feel sufficiently full ..

I personally never concerned myself with measuring and weighing vegetables. Keeping my cheese/cream intake at under 4 ounces a day, I devoted to remainder of my carbohydrate count to veggies. This kept things simple!

I got the impression from the book that you weren't supposed to eat over 3 cups of veggies a day. Period. I was just wondering why he limited it like that. Did I read it wrong?

              Re: Veggie Question

you are correct for the 14 day induction period you stick with the 3 cups and the less then 20 net carbs. remember Dr Atkins wrote this for every one and believe it or not some folk are so metabolically resistant that their CCLL is 20 net carbs or less. He wanted everybody trying his plan to see results for thiose 14 days so he arbatrarily set the number at 20 as the max. In your DANDR when you read the chapter on carbohydrates you will see he clearly said most of you can have up to 3 cups. Some folk can't.

after your 14 days whwen you have your weight loss number for that time to see what your metabolic ressitance is and your estimated CCLL is them you can add more veggies aas the first week of OWL 5 net of those green things will give you many more cups if that is the route you want to go.
Dr Atkins told Larry King he was eating 6-8 cups of veggies a day which is what you will see you will be doing too when you move to OWL and beyond.

14 days is a very short time to limit your veggies to only 3 cuyps!

                Re: Veggie Question

                Just to add...

Some of the veggies on the Induction lists have 4-6 net carbs per 1/2 to 1 cup. So if you eat say 3 cups of jicama (5 net carbs per cup), that's 15 net carbs---which isn't a bad thing at all, IF you spend your remaining 5 net carbs wisely.

So while it's tempting to be cavalier about not measuring or weighing the veggie, you ought to think twice before doing so because if you are one of those people with a high metabolic resistance to weight loss, you probably won't be able to get away with doing that. Since you don't know what your degree of metabolic resistance is during the first 2 weeks of Induction, it's more prudent to follow the Rules. As 2Big said, if you want more veggies, after the 14 Day Induction is over, move onto OWL, where the first thing you'll add is an additional 5 net carbs of the Induction veggies.

                  Re: Veggie Question

I have never measured my dark green veggie intake. Like others have said....it depends upon the type. If you want to add spinach...go for it. I think it helps you develop a lifetime of good eating habits. And I must commend you for asking about veggies instead of lc crapola!

Oh and vegetarians get fat from macaroni and cheese, rice cakes, rice crackers, pasta pasta and mo pasta and I'm sure those darn carob chips! not from veggies. No offense Iap.....many vegetarians I know have horrible diets and actually don't eat enough veggies.
