  • Retro-Atkins and Soy Confusion

I was at my parents' over the last week, and found in their book collection a copy of the older book, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (Avon books, yellow cover with title in teal and fuschia letters). I decided to read it and try the diet the way it was intended before the introduction of the soon-to-be-defunct Atkins Nutritionals influence. Is that a good idea, or should I stick with the version in the red book? Quite honestly, I don't understand which version is the preferred regiment.

My MAIN question is, what is the difference between soy powder, soya powder, and soy flour? I was going to attempt to make Atkins' Basic Pancake for the first time, but have no idea what the first ingredient is!

Also, if you know of a link to a delicious, extended-induction-friendly palatable pancake, please provide! I'd hate to waste my ingredients on something that might come out yucky. Thanks!

    Re: Retro-Atkins and Soy Confusion

Soy is also called "soya", especially in recipe books before the early 1980s (don't ask me why.)

Depending on the age of the book from where the recipe was taken, soy powder can mean anything from soy milk powder to soy flour. Soy milk powder are dehydrated soy milk granules. Soy flour is dried soy beans that are ground up into a flour or meal.

    It's confusing isn't it.

If you click the link in my siggy at the bottom, it will bring you to my personal webpage. I have a soy article in there that might be helpful to you.

the book is dated 1992, uses both "soy powder" and "soya powder", but doesn't distinguish between them.

For instance, on pg 372, the recipe for Basic Protein Bread calls for 1/2 C soya powder, but on the next page, 373, the recipe for Basic Pancakes calls for 1/2 C soy powder. And then, page 375 has a recipe for small pancakes that calls for 1/2 C soy powder and 1/2 C protein powder! I don't know what to make of all this! Please help!

As for the pancake... a recipe I got in alt.support.diet.low-carb - terrific stuff:

        2 eggs
        4 ts unsweetened cocoa
2 tb SF chocolate syrup (DaVinci, or Torani)
        2 tb heavy cream

Just blend everything until smooth and fry omelette-style slowly in a pan with butter or even better with coconut oil.

Some people top it with additional cream cheese & SF strawberry syrup (or even berries).

That's got me stumped! Read the beginning of the recipe chapter, usually it contains a description of ingredients.

Anyhow, if the recipe contains soy flour---it's acceptable for the legume rung of OWL (soy is a legume, legumes aren't allowed during the Induction phase).

My favorite pancake is induction friendly!

            2 eggs
            2 oz cream cheese
            2 teaspoons of Splenda
            ground cinnamon.

Mix well, batter will be thin. Fry in a little melted butter. Serve with SF syrup. You can double this recipe, or even triple it if you're really hungry. The paincakes will be thin, but good! What could be easier.

So this is not the 1972 version? I did it by the 1992 version and still do it to this day.

I think the yellow book with teal and pink letters is the one that everyone follows - although they call it the 2002 version. I suspect it's just the older version though - I specifically remember hearing NOT to use the new version.

I have no idea what you people are talking about.

Hi, Bugout. I think that you found an antique and its out of date, but maybe a historical object. LOL
I have one of his old cookbooks and they have induction recipes in them that are not at all induction friendly also. Just follow the rules that we have in the FAQ section and you'll be fine, but maybe the book is worth something on EBAY.

I am interested to hear more comments from the moderators here. My book is also yellow, same colors and 1992. It is called Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution. I hope this is the proper one as it is the one I will be following starting Thursday. Would hate to think I was doing it right and was doing it wrong all along.

                        That's the wrong one.
                        Sorry.
Think about it...Atkins had 10 years of work and research to add to the 2002 edition.

                            Re: Retro-Atkins and Soy Confusion

Mine is the 1999 version (yellow, blue and pink).

In it, the preface to the 1999 version says he's added three chapters since the 1992 version:

one on scientific developments that may clarify the controversy over which diet is really best for you

another deals with frequently asked questions

the third deals with 'rather preposterous misconceptions' that I have seen in print about the program.

In addition, they updated chapters with info on how to interact with the atkins folks and their 'expanded services'

The only thing that looks relevant really is this statement: "also, throughout the book, I have updated information when appropriate." What that information is or how it changed from the previous book is unclear.

I don't know what the 2002 book changed in addition, but none of those changes seem all that important to me. Anyone have the preface to the 2002 edition so we can figure out whether we all need to go buy new books? ;-P
