Cane sugar is made from sugar cane. Come to Louisiana and you'll see HUGE fields of sugar cane all over south central Louisiana. Big sugar industry here.

HFCS is made from corn. Here's an article that explains it:

If sugar doesn't make you fat, then why does the absence of it make you thin?

Re: Sugar Industry says: No link between sugar and obesity

Let's see, I stop eating sugar completely and 70 lbs falls off in 6 months, plus I don't watch calories AT ALL and have maintained my current weight for another 7 months . So apparently my weight loss had nothing to do with cutting out the sugar, so I'm off to the store to get a case of Pepsi and a box of Ho-Hos. Who's with me?

Anything to make a nickel. They can keep their sugar.

The reason for that is because a potato has less fat than a twinkie or a Mars bar.

That's one of the "dark secrets" about the Glycemic Index. Since it measures how fast the sugar in the food increases the sugar in your blood, anything that slows down that sugar absorption will decrease the GI of a food. So fiber affects the GI and fat will too. Hence a plain baked potato has a higher GI than a Mars bar or a twinkie.

I can only begin to IMAGINE the potential ways the GI will be abused by people who haven't overcome their bad eating habits and learned how to choose foods wisely (or who are still in their bargaining phase and will try to stretch the rules to accomodate 2 candy bars daily because those 2 candy bars have the same or slightly lower GI than 2 servings of baked potato).

Great article! I have printed and distributed it. My co-workers hate me and I love it.

For those of you who don't know as well in supporting Betty's potato theory......the body cannot distinguish between sugars. It is processd the same.

Hi Folks, New to this board and am grateful to be here. I am freaking out because for the first time I got a blood report that indicated high blood sugar.. sure I am overweight, and wicked stress in my life right now (baby I was adopting lost her battle against pneumonia in July) does this mean I have diabetes?? my PCP is less than friendly but was concerned enough to prescribe glucophage and a check back in 30 days. She indicated that just a simple loss of weight is enough to turn the tide. I started a week ago and am feeling clearer headed (induction that is) and better for it. But MAN, was I in denial or what. I was also certainly dehydrated as well and am giving my blessed cells a break by drinking at least 64 oz of water a day. Any other suggestions please feel free to send along!

Re: Sugar Industry says: No link between sugar and obesity

This is what I think and it isn't based on anything scientific. I think sugar makes you fat when you eat it in starches and combined with fat. Think of what we eat when we get and stay fat: ice cream, cookies, chocolate, potato chips, other chips, cakes, pie, pastries. It would be interesting to see how much weight a person gains if he were to only eat sugary foods but low-fat and no to low starch, even without exercise.
