Re: Thunder thighs...will they ever go away? Need advice from fitness gurus!

I'm a big advocate of light weights/high rep, myself.

I had amazing results with BOTH running and resistance training and believe the combo is fantastic.

Depending on what exercises you're doing, you may not need any weights for quite some time and will probably still really like the results you see.

I have to build back up on my squats/lunges/plies - but at my max I was only using 8lb dumbbells.

You should PM me, Yoly. I might have something for you.

A note about the elliptical machine:
This machine does NOT work for me. I used to use it and sure I got sweaty but I never felt like I got a good work-out even after 45 min. I have observed the people in my gyms using the ellipticals and most of them are cheating. They aren't using their muscles to propell the leg pieces, they are going as fast as they can and using MOMENTUM to go fast, not their muscles. Then they lean over it and rest their weight on their arms, getting even LESS of a work-out. I prefer jogging/walking or using the stair machine (not stair climber but the one that looks like an escalator with stairs)

      My 2 cents

Ugh i typed out this huge long post and hit back by accident

Anyway my view on this issue is that it all has to do with genetics. I have had "thunder thighs" since I was a kid and i was a small child. When I was in highschool I was 5'2, 120 lbs, maybe smaller. I wore child tops/size 0 and wore size 8 pants. I am starting the couch to 5k program but I am not putting any hopes on losing my thunder thighs.. i know i am predespositioned to have them forever

That's like me too, Daesania- I'm pretty even from top to bottom, but there is nothing about me that is long and lean. I'm genetically predisposed to having a stocky, muscular build (jocky LOL), and I got over it awhile ago.

I may be programmed to be built jocky- but dammit - if I am, I'm going to be the most toned/slim stocky I can be. ROFL

you can get rid of them. the couch to 5k won't do it, but the couch to 5k is the first step (also, don't underestimate the couch to 5k, this is a big achievement). If you keep running, to half or even full marathon levels your legs will be "thinner". It's all about changing the muscle shape in your legs. loooong distance running will do that. good luck!!

Hey guys! I am the one who originally posted this thread and I just found the perfect advertisement by NIKE to go along with my original question. It gives me a different and positive take on the issue. This is awesome! Here is what is said:

"I have thunder thighs. And that's a compliment, because they are strong, and toned, and muscular. And although they are unwelcome in the petite section, they are cheered on in marathons. Fifty years from now I'll bounce a grandchild on my thunder thighs and then I'll go out for a run! Just Do It. Nikewomen.com" (Needless to say, I cut out the ad and hung it on my mirror!)

Is that cool or what! Ok girls! There is our inspiration and new perspective on "thunder thighs!"

                    Blessings!

That is so cool! I have had thunder thighs since I was a teenager, I think it's because I ran track and rode my bike everywhere. My husband has always loved my thighs, I guess I should start loving them too!

Hey as010! I'm not sure if you are asking me or ttdriver. If you are asking me, "Is thin possible?" it is going awesome! I am up to two miles now. And it does feel good! I never dreamed I would enjoy running (jogging). The only concern I have is that my knees are sometimes sore the day after. Can anyone speak to this?

Are you doing the couch to 5k program? Let me know.

                              Blessings!

Yeah last month's Men's Health magazine said you are only burning 30% of the calories you should be when you lean over like that!

<1 hr 5 nights a week on the eliptical. Start at level 6 work up to level 8.
