I experienced this too when I tried the Couch to 5k plan.

I've never had knee problems, even when I was playing netball. This scared me, so I stopped after a week.

I had some great Adidas runners that were in good condition (only a month or two old) so I'm sure it wasn't that and at the time, I had a BMI bordering on 25-26 and had been walking every night for the past year, so I don't think it was a shock to the system.

I basically decided that having back and ankle problems were enough and I didn't want to risk damaging my knees, I'm just one of those people not cut out to be a runner.

    Bummer, eh?

I never dreamed I would enjoy running (jogging). The only concern I have is that my knees are sometimes sore the day after. Can anyone speak to this?

      Blessings!
If you experience sore knees, then you need to invest in some HIGH QUALITY RUNNING SHOES. Not cross trainers, not any other shoes .. RUNNING SHOES WITH SHOCK ABSORPTION, AND HIGH QUALITY CUSHIONING MADE FOR RUNNING.

When I first started running, I thought 'hey I've got good enough shoes' .. well, it didn't take long before my KNEES HURT BAD ... I soon discovered I had runner's knee .. NOT FUN .. it took me 4 weeks of rest, elevation, ice and compression to get rid of the pain. It was at that point I was convinced that the RIGHT RUNNING SHOE isn't optional ..

I went out and bought New Balance 991s and my feet loved them! I never experienced knee pain again. Now, I am in love with my NB 1221s ... which I replace with a new pair every 300 miles.

THE RIGHT SHOES MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

I'm not sure where you run, but I used to log 25-30 miles a week, in half decent shoes... but i did most of my running on dirt or grass.... not so much pavement... so I DID run in cross trainers.. a lot... and trail shoes... (wider more stable bottom.. for the gravel etc.)..

but it IS important to find a shoe that fits... really fits.. and fits your running style, mileage and surface

I definately agree with Betty that the right shoes make all the difference... they just don't have to be the most expensive.....I have a wide forefoot.. so nike's mostly were too narrow for me..... I LOVED Brooks and SAucony... then I ran across a Nike crosstrainer that they dont' even make now.. it was cheap... called the Windrunner... and I bought 7 pair at one time.. (when I learned they discontinued them and I found them less than half price)

i agree too. good shoes and avoiding concrete can really help a lot. I also get soreness in my knees but it's caused by carrying extra weight on runs...but which came first the chicken or the egg. if i run then it can help me be lighter and then my knees won't hurt as much.

anyway, i hope you push through and I can also recommend using glucosomine and icing your knees as soon as possible after running.

the thing i notice most is when i am driving and I see someone else running. i can understand how hard they are working and i send my wishes to them to keep on going, run strong, keep good form

Make sure that if you are weight lifting that you are using light weight. You should be able to do more than 10 reps. This will tone muscles. If you can't do 10 this will build muscle (ie-body builders) Also, cardio is a must to get rid of the excess fat or flab

yeah, you wouldn't want to wake up one day and accidentally be as big as a pro bodybuilder :/

I think it's be pretty difficult, as a female, to build such muscle to look like a bodybuilder from doing weights. You'd need a pretty hard amount of working out, mixed with some body-building shakes, supplements etc. to look that "built".

I've been working out lifting weights for about 10 months know, strength training for an hour a week plus cardio 2x a week, and I have some nice muscle tone going, especially in my legs and it's made a difference in how they look, but they don't look bulky with muscle, just more shapely and toned. I do a combination of weight machines (inner/outer thighs, calf press and lifts, reverse leg press) and some squats/lunges and sets of leg lifts, and I can feel a huge difference in the muscles and strength, and alot less fat. Cardio really helps here too.

well yes, that's why i think comments about lift light weights and the use of the word tone are just silly. things just don't work that way.
