    Hello!

I have a question about sweetners. I do know that one is allowed 3 servings daily. My question is how do I measure the serving size.

I'm using Hermesetas sweetner (powder) and it comes in bulk. Would my serving size be a teaspoon? coffe spoon? I have no ideia..

    TIA

hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you are talking about Hermesetas Granulated Sweetener by McCormick (Looks muck like bulk Splenda and measure spoon for spoon like sugar) then you are getting dressed up Aspartamine as the ingredients in the granular are Maltodextrin, Sweeteners (Aspartame* (2%) and Acesulfame-K (1%)).

Neonlike, have you considered trying Splenda? I'm sure it is available in southwestern Europe; but if not, it can be purchased on eBay, Netrition.com, Drugstore.com, & Amazon.com - all of which ship internationally. If you feel these sites' prices and shipping are overpriced, I can help you out if you would like to send me a PM (private message). Europe has Low-Carb Rolo, so I know what it's like to do without something you love. lol

But if you just don't prefer Splenda, my mistake!

Thanks for you all for your input! Really appreciated!

2big, thats exactly the one. I do realise the main sweetner is aspartame, but I've been unable to find splenda anywhere. I only use the sweetner very sparingly (sp?).

I did find a liquid one thats mainly sacharin (no aspartame), but I'm not sure if I can bake with it.

            Sheila I'll PM you.. thank's!

              Re: sweetner allowance

Most liquid sweeteners here in Europe are basically the same stuff, no matter what brand: saccharine, cyclamate, thaumatine, some fructose (ugh) and citric acid and sorbic acid (another ugh). You can bake with this stuff and the store brands are reasonably cheap. Everything else (the sugar-like stuff) is either aspartame & fillers or cyclamate / saccharine & sugar alcohols as fillers.

In the EU splenda hasn't been approved officially as sweetener, so you'll have to look for imports, probably UK or even USA. What is available in most European countries are DaVinci and Torani syrups sweetened with Splenda - just try a google search...

I have been thinking lately about ordering Torani syrups but I guess I like the Splanda stuff too much so I'm better off with miniscule amounts of the liquid sweetener just because it doesn't taste too good and I'm not tempted to use it ever so often

After all, sweeteners are frankenfoods with no nutritional value wthatsoever.

just my 2 cent, of course

                  Re: sweetner allowance

You can also use Stevia, which is an herb that is sweet. It is pretty good, no aftertaste.

Splenda is the best, but if it is hard to find in Europe, then.......but if you can order the Toriani or DaVinci syrups, they are fantastic. You can cook with them or pour them over stuff.

You will find, by the way, that as time goes by, you need less sweetener. Your tastebuds get more reasonable about things once the carbs and sugar are eliminated from your body! It's really nice.

neon like just be sure if you use the aspartamene stuff you aren't one of the 25% of the population who stall doing Atkins using that stuff.

                      75g of glucose!!!

Thank you guys, but I won't be wanting anything sweet any time soon...

This mornig I went to what I thought would be a routine blood exams, and it turned out to be a diabetic exam, or something of that sort!

I had routine exams made on the second day of induction, and my doctor was not happy at all with the results. I tried to explain about Atkins, but he didn't want to hear any of it. He ordered another batch of exams. I thought it would be a repetition of the last ones, but no. They had me drinking 75g of pure glucose, and took blood like five times, during a period of 3 hours!

Now I'm exausted, a bit nauseated and mad at my doctor, that he didn't explain to me the nature of this exams...

So, no more cravings for something sweet, as long as I remember that nasty glicose water... yuk!

                        ((((Neon))))

While I think it's a good one to be sure about diabetic tests, I am shocked about the way this happened. I will never ever allow a doctor to order a batch of exams without having explained in detail the why and what (and having some time to do a proper research on that subject). Unfortunately a lot of doctors are not exactly knowledgable when it comes to food & diabetes...

I suggest you head right over to the diabetic board here at ADBB and let the folks over there explain to you what matters, what you should be looking and asking for and whaat you should expect from the results.

Not craving sweets is at last one positive result

                          Re: sweetner allowance

you need to call your doc immediately because you are going to test false positive for diabetes based on your bodies reaction to that massive dose of sugar. It is a very well reported and studied test result. Most American docs even have normal patients load carbs for 3 days before they take it just to avoid any false positives!

I agree with 2Big. For low carbers, the glucose tolerance test has to be prepped differently. You have to up your carbs to about 100-150 daily for several days before the test. Granted this doesn't mean you can eat cakes, cookies and ice cream to your hearts content, but it means you'll have to move onto the Maintenance phase for that time and eat the healthy carbs like legumes, whole grains, fruit and of course more veggies.
