Did the food bank have things like canned green beans, canned spinach, canned corned beef, canned tuna, canned chicken, etc.? Whenever I donate to the food bank I usually toss in cans of veggies and tuna.

Well, corn isn't too bad. If you do have to choice, try to pick out whole grain products and avoid the refined stuff.

I don't know where you live... but maybe there's others in the area you could check out... my former brother in-law was involved in one that's not a government run thing.. and it had tons of cool stuff... grocery stores and food distributors donated food... some about to expire.. but actually good for LOTS longer... (like cereal etc.)...

anyway.. I know the gov. programs here in Georgia are heavy on cheese, peanut butter, dry milk, etc... calorie/nutrition dense stuff that kids can survive on....

like I said.. don't know where you live.. but maybe check out a farmers market for free or cheap cheap veggies ... eggs... etc.. eggs are like $38 a dozen about every other week at the local grocery store here

              good luck

Our chuch has a St.Vincent de Paul food bank that they open to anyone (don't have to be Catholic) every week, I think once or twice. You might want to try a couple of Catholic churches. You just show up and they give out food. No questions asked. Definately call around.

Re: the governement wants me to be fat.

I'm sorry you're having tough times right now. The best thing to do is now watch your calories until you can get yourself back to this WOE. Calorie counting does work, and even though you can't be eating the best things right now...exercise is still an option.
Make daily meal plans with the foods you have and stick with a low calorie day. You may surprise yourself by maintaining, or even losing by watching those calories (and portions) and toning with exercise (even if its just walking around the block every night).
I wish you lots of luck and keep us posted. Like you say...make lemonade with those lemons you've been dealt with...but make it low cal lemonade

I'm sorry you are suffering monetarily right now. As you said, make lemonase! Raz you had a great point. Modify your diet to calorie counting and exercise.....get back to induction when you can. I know what those boxes consist of you poor thing as I used to be a Teen Center director and shopped at the food bank for them. It is all carb laden. As well, contact churches in your area for the "fish" program. They may have a better "pantry" Good luck to you.
Make it a happy low carb life!
