  • Misconceptions about Atkins

Yet another misconception about this Way of Eating...

I keep getting flak about the Atkins company caving as though the diet truly revolves around the pre-packaged foods and shakes, and that minus the chewy goodness of something Atkinsy in a wrapper my left buttock will immediately bubble forth and my weight loss will be no more.

Do people not realize that Dr Atkins, who formulated this way of eating was able to succesfully follow this way of eating without the packaged foods in the 1960's?

I mean, if you're the first one who does something, you kind of have to do it minus the merchandising and product lines which come later.

I meran the Six Million Dollar Man action figure didn't come about until after the show, now, did it?

    Sheesh.

    Re: Misconceptions about Atkins

    Absolutely, Cleo
When people suggest that I might be upset by any loss of 'lowcarb' frankenfoods they are always surprised when I tell tham that for the last 2 years plus I have not eaten one of those 'aids' to lowcarbing!!

I tell them that I believe that anyone wanting to eat Atkins is better off now that they are not so readily available.

After all - if Atkins.com has had to say on their website that 'if you find you stall from eating these products you ought to drop them' it must be fairly common for them to stall people.
    http://atkins.com/Archive/2004/9/27-531387.html

These products were designed to make doing Atkins easier and more convenient, but they are not necessary to do Atkins properly. If you find that eating any low-carb product hinders your weight-loss progress, simply stop eating it, or cut back until you discover your tolerance threshold. Usually, overconsumption, rather than the product itself, accounts for stalled weight loss.
I imagine once I am at goal and on maintenance I might choose to eat one but as my food tastes have changed so much I really do prefer a highfat lowcarb 'treat' like meat/cheese rollups or blueberries and yocheese nowadays. And my new favorite is lychees and fullfat greek yoghurt!! Beat that as a tasty snack frankenfood manufacturers if you can!! I just hope it doesn't hinder my climb up the OWL rungs (now where is that 'fingers crossed' icon when you need it?)
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

      Re: Misconceptions about Atkins

I just wanted to say this...those Atkins shakes are disgusting!!! The bars aren't all that great either. I won't be missing them.

I've noticed that some people say their on atkins, and eat frankenfoods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner...and they wonder why they aren't losing any weight???

I'll miss their ketchup, barbeque sauce and pancake mixture.

Yes, I agree. I am so thankful that I never bought into the pre-packaged low-carb foods. I've never used any of them - so I won't miss them at all.

I think that people are always looking for negative things to say so that others won't succeed where they have failed. I've heard so many negative things about Atkins and how it is unhealthy for me...but...if feeling this great and losing this much weight is unhealthy for me, then...so be it. Seeing is believing and I am a believer when it comes to Atkins.

                lol

I'll admit that I did buy 5 of those bars when I first started this WOE. Then I found this board and didn't eat them until I moved onto OWL. Then I found out I get kicked out of ketosis. So, I tossed the remaining ones.

I also purchased the Atkins pancake syrup, then realized I really don't have very many uses for it and had to invent some ways to use it up (thought it tasted nasty anyway). But that's all the food stuff I purchased from them.

                  Re: Misconceptions about Atkins

I had to address the question of, "Atkins has gone bankrupt - how will you ever eat again??" to my Atkins FAQ the day Atkins Nutritionals filed for bankruptcy protection because I was getting so inundated with e-mails. That question still makes me laugh when I think about it. LOL

really? have you looked at their website or the latest editions of the book ? doesn't surprise me one bit..that's what they push. if you look at the meal plans in the last version of DANDR there's a bar or shake in almost every meal. and the bake mixes and shakes are in many of the recipes on the website.

so many ppl hear stories of Atkins followers having a very successful weight loss, they go to the site..the pick up the latest copy of the book..this is the plan that their given. of course this is what they think..cuase that is what the atkins corp is now pushing..
