    Two Studies Vindicate Atkins Diet

The Diet Really Does Help People Lose Weight

Save It Email It Print It
(AP) NEW ORLEANS A month after Dr. Robert C. Atkins' death, his much-ridiculed diet has received its most powerful scientific support yet: Two studies in one of medicine's most distinguished journals show it really does help people lose weight faster without raising their cholesterol.

The research, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, found that people on the high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate Atkins diet lose twice as much weight over six months as those on the standard low-fat diet recommended by most major health organizations.

However, one of the studies found that the Atkins dieters regain much of the weight by the end of one year.

Atkins, who died April 17 at age 72 after falling and hitting his head on an icy sidewalk in New York, lived to see several shorter studies that found, to researchers' great surprise, that his diet is effective and healthy in the short run.

Although those reports have been presented at medical conferences, none until now has been published in a top-tier journal. And one of the studies in the journal lasted a year, making it the longest one yet.

``For the last 20 years that I've been helping people lose weight, I've been trashing the Atkins diet without any real data to rely on,'' said Dr. Michael Hamilton, an obesity researcher who was not part of either study. ``Now we have some data to give us some guidance.''

Now, he said, he would neither trash it nor endorse it. ``I'm going to say I don't know. The evidence isn't in,'' he said.

Thanks for the FYI. I was concerned as a new person to this woe. I wanted to know feedback to alieviate fears that I have that you can lose wt on this diet and keep it off. That I can look forward to this article being wrong. That all of this hard work is going to be lost. At this stage where I am at, I do worry and this response didn't help, other than to make me feel ashamed .
I have read a lot of articles that have been posted and I did not feel that putting this on here was too damaging. I sincerely apologize to all on this forum!

Thank you for the information very interesting! I hope He would have been alive to see how Atkins has helped people, and that scientist and MDs are recognizing the diet as safe.

If you don't make lifestyle changes, you will regain weight no matter how you lose it. When you work the program correctly, the weight will stay off.

Re: What"s your opinion on this article????

Atkins is like exercising. If you stop, you lose the benefits.

The medical profession already treats obesity as a disease. The problem is, they don't treat it as if it's a chronic disease. Chronic diseases like diabetis stay with you once you have it, it stays with you. You can treat it but you can't cure it (not yet anyway). If you stop treating your diabetis, the complication associated with it will arise. People with diabetis have to learn to incorporate diabetis treatment into their lifestyle.

The same goes for Atkins. Most people on Atkins learn that their bodies are carbohydrate intolerant which leads to obesity. Atkins treats this condition but does not cure it. If you are carb intolerant, you will always be carb intolerant. Preventing obesity from recurring requires incorporating Atkins into your lifestyle, which is why the people on this board refer to Atkins as a "Way of Life" or a "Way of Eating" and not as a "diet".

Atkins as a "diet" as commonly understood by people does not work.

Thank you so much for your input Matawguro. You really helped me to look at obesity in a way that is life long treatment and effort. Thanks to all others for your advice.

And how did they regain the weight? By going off the diet! HELLO?

I'm going on 4 years! Could it be because I made this a PERMANENT CHANGE IN MY EATING?

NEWSFLASH: GO BACK TO EATING WHAT MADE YOU FAT AND GUESS WHAT, YOU'LL GAIN IT BACK. (its not rocket science)...

Re: What"s your opinion on this article????

                        Michele,
Your fears are very valid. When I first started, I didn't think it would even work short term, much less for the rest of my life. That was almost 3 years ago and I'm not a statistic.

It does take a change in your mindset, though, to keep the weight off. You're not ever 'finished' although it's not always as restrictive as it is in Induction.

One of the things about studies is that it's not always possible to draw accurate conclusions about the *cause* of something. Generally, you can't take one variably out of something as complex as life and say 'this is the magic bullet' and it works flawlessly when applied to completely different situations.

For example, some cars are cheaper to insure because they don't have as many repairs or collisions, on average. Is this attributable to the car itself or the type of people who would buy that kind of car? If someone who doesn't take care of their stuff gets one of these cars, can they expect it to be the same as someone who does take care of their stuff?

In the same vein, people who aren't willing to follow the rules or stick with something long term aren't going to be successful with ANY diet. Toss those in an Atkins study, and that's not proof that it doesn't work. That's proof that those people couldn't do it.

Personally, I believe that the majority of descendants with European ancestry can be successful on this plan, and that it can work for others, but it will *only* work if you're willing to put in the effort.

Whole foods, un-processed and minimum of 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day........
After 5 years on this woe, this is what I eat. After 5 years I am healthier and thinner than ever. And Michele it is true....you will re-gain on any plan if you don't permanently change your eating habits. But let me ask you this..........how can a whole foods lifestyle be un-healthy? One may choose to argue the fat factor. However, the natural progression for me has been the lack of a need for the fat that I needed on induction. Now I just have very expensive taste and those little american bistros are finally enough food to satisfy me. Before Atkins it's the buffet baby! These studies are going to be thrown all over the place. Let's also not forget how much control corporate america has over these studies. Don't think Kraft doesn't have their dirty little hands in it! I personally don't trust the FDA. It's funny.....the farther ahead we get in this country the farther behind we actually fall. Our health that is.
Now we have an obesity epidemic. Read the book Fast Food Nation. It's a real eye opener.

Wow!...you guys really said it. I firmly believe this whole heartedly. Even as a nurse I know all this, but it really helps to have people reafirm this. I guess it helps to make it feel real. I am at the beginning of my weight loss and I get frustrated so easy. I know we all want the magic potion for fast wt. loss and their is none. Reading the forums and seeing all the wonderful before and after pics help so much. It really helps to hear from those who have went through it and continue to do so well. Heck...I am even afraid to get on the scale for fear it won't be to my expectations. This is soooo weird because I am not a scaredy cat type person. Thanks for all your advice and help. You guys are all so great!
